An Elephant in Koh Samui. Entertainment or disgrace?

An Elephant in Koh Samui. Entertainment or disgrace?

Is it an elephant disgrace?

On a day tour while holidaying in Koh Samui. Part of the package was to go elephant trekking (optional) and see an elephant show. It was the first time I had ever seen any kind of elephant experience in the South East Asia or outside a zoo for that matter.

First of all, elephant Trekking, it doesn’t seem right. Imagine having someone sit on your neck all day, bossing you around in what direction to go. while labouring around two people on your back. Who, I am sure do not realise, for better or worse what the beautiful animal is going through.

To the payer, It is just entertainment. We are all guilty of indulging in our life without thinking of the consequences to others. It is not a sin to be ignorant. But in life we need to stop and think sometimes. Is what we doing morally right? This same question could be asked about the elephants. Trekking all day, in horrid conditions and without rest.

From my point of view, I couldn’t help but shake my head in disgust. Without fully knowing the full details, I can only hope that these beautiful animals were getting treated with respect by their owners. But as I said I don’t know the answer to that.

Then there was the elephant show. Now this was a whole lot of nonsense and sexism if I had ever seen it. Kids were watching and laughing and in the centre of it were two innocent elephants doing what they had been trained to do.

To put it blunt. Three volunteers to were called up, the last two being one man and one woman, and to have a trained elephant plant its trunk over his or her private parts. What the hell. Sure the audience laughed. It is easy to get caught in the moment. I couldn’t help but walk out of that amphitheatre in disgust and dismay at what I had witnessed.

Now I am not an elephant expert. Are the trainers harming them? I hope not. I need to believe they are not.

I am not writing this post to tell you to keep you away. It is your decision. But keep in mind, please be sure that the money you are using for entertainment involving any animal is going to the right cause and that the animals are treated with kindness and respect. Because in this world it is not always the case.
