Better weather and good health meant it was time to get active in Thailand in the 2nd edition of beautiful Khao Lak Diaries.
The sun began to shine, and the bed that had been my sanctuary during the first part of my trip to Khao Lak was now less enticing (although I still felt a little weak). Perhaps it was the change in weather, but my body was now ready to explore. With renewed energy, I started to discover the treasures that Khao Lak had to offer, and I was not disappointed.
The surroundings were breathtaking, from the vibrant town centre to the beautiful beaches. However, the highlight of my trip was undoubtedly a visit to Phang Nga Bay. The islands, mangroves, and landscapes were nothing short of magical. As my trip drew to a close, I made it my mission to embrace every moment, whether relaxing by the Mai Khao Lak resort pool or taking a stroll through the town.
It’s safe to say Khao Lak has left its mark on me, and I’ll forever cherish the memories of exploring its charms. Now let’s explore the second edition of our time in the tropical Thai destination.

Highlights of Khao Lak Diaries – 2nd Edition – Getting Active in Thailand
The 2nd Edition of Khao Lak Diaries is chock-full of exciting ways to get active in Thailand. Don’t let the stunning beaches and relaxing atmosphere fool you – plenty of adventure can be had here.
A Longboat into Phang Nga Bay
Have you ever experienced true beauty in nature? Phang Nga Bay is an absolute gem nestled in Thailand, and it’s as stunning as it gets. Embarking on an old longboat, the wind flowed through the air, providing much-needed relief to everyone from the humid conditions.
Even on an overcast day, the scenery was breathtaking as we bypassed each island in the bay – each with its hidden beaches and secrets. I was lost in a paradise I never wanted to escape. I couldn’t help but ponder, “if only I had my own boat to do as I please.” A day out in Phang Nga Bay is an unforgettable experience, especially if you’re an adventure seeker.
I had the chance to canoe in the mangroves and through the Limestone Caves, with guides doing most of the work. It was an active day, with the other highlight, James Bond Island, and the floating markets of Panyee Island, owned by Thai Muslims. Join me to discover this paradise in Phang Nga Bay – you won’t regret it.

tour to James Bond Island!
James Bond Island
Nestled amid Thailand’s crystal-clear waters lies a piece of cinematic history. The James Bond Island, made famous by the 1974 movie “The Man with the Golden Gun”, has become a popular choice for tourists seeking adventure and excitement. And with good reason too! It’s a spectacular setting with a lonesome rock and a hidden beach, providing the perfect backdrop for all your holiday snaps.
The vibrant overpriced markets, run by the locals, offer an authentic Thai experience for the intrepid traveller. Though our time on the island was brief, it was enough to take in the breathtaking views, soak up the sun, and admire the sheer beauty of it all. A visit to James Bond Island is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will leave an indelible mark on your heart.
The Khao Lak Night Markets
Regarding markets in Thailand, it’s hard to pick just one. However, the Bang Niang Markets in Khao Lak should be on your list. This bustling hub in the centre of the town has everything from clothes and souvenirs to fresh fruit and veg. But the best part? Sharpening your bartering skills to snag a great deal.
With stalls, bars, and restaurants galore, you could easily spend hours wandering through this vibrant market. And make sure to stop by the fresh fruit smoothie stands – they’re a refreshing treat perfect for cooling off in the Thai heat. Don’t miss out on the Bang Niang Markets on your next visit to Thailand.
The Sky Bar – Khao Lak’s only Rooftop Bar
If you’re looking for a place to unwind and enjoy the beauty of nature, Mai Khao Lak Beach Resort’s Sky Bar is worth a visit. While it’s true that it’s quite a distance from town and the prices may run a little high due to its resort status, nothing can compare to its breathtaking sunset view.
Imagine sipping on a finely-made cocktail while looking out towards the Andaman Sea – the perfect way to end a relaxing day. Although it may be quiet during your visit, the serene atmosphere only adds to the experience. So why not take a chance and step into this neat bar and restaurant? You’ll be rewarded with a picture-perfect evening that you’ll never forget.

Hi Anthony,
Brilliant.
We always drive by Khao Lak when we did the old skool Phuket to Burma visa reasons. It looks awesome from a distance, and from your post I see it looks awesome up close and personal too.
Ahhh bugs. No Thai market would be whole and complete without some large crickets and the like.
Makes sense too.
After being in Thailand on and off for 2 years the place creeps with large insects. Seize, and use for protein. From what I hear, not a half bad taste either. Although I will go off of other’s advice, thank you 🙂
Thanks for the fun share Anthony. You guys look like you had a blast.
Ryan
Thanks Ryan
Had a great time, except for the fact I had to waste a whole day in bed, as something got me and it wasn’t pleasant.
Cheers for the comment.
