The Lake District is a fantastic place to visit at any time of the year. For many, the winter months, when there is a real chill in the air, frost on the ground and snow on the fells, is the perfect time to visit the region and enjoy all it offers. It can certainly be a little quieter on the footpaths and fells than during the warmer months, and for those who love walking, this can be a bonus.

Of course, you will want to book a room in one of the many Lake District Hotels, as it can still be quite busy even during the low season. Then, it’s time to plan for some of the many things to do in the winter at the Lakes.

The Lake District is a fantastic year-round destination. Winter offers a magical atmosphere with chilly air, frosted ground, and snowy falls. It’s a quieter time to explore the footpaths and enjoy walking. Enjoy all that the region has to offer!

Walking in the Lake District

No list of things to do in the Lake District is complete without some mention of walking. After all, it is just one of the things that attracts people to the area. Many of the walks will still be suitable during winter, but there are a few things to consider.

The ground underfoot, if not muddy, is likely to be frosty. Sturdy walking boots are essential. It is also important to wear layers to keep warm, carry a fully charged mobile phone (in case of emergency) and a flask of something warm to drink in case the temperatures drop. You should also check the weather before setting off; it is an excellent idea to let someone know where you are going.

The Cumbria Dark Skies Festival

This is an annual festival, and whilst not strictly winter, it runs from 28th October to 18th November and is well worth mentioning. The event is open to all, from experienced stargazers to complete novices. It features a range of nighttime events, from stargazing swims to nighttime canoeing and astronomy talks to starry sky art sessions.

Even if you don’t fancy running, it is a great event to go and support, with many runners sporting Christmas-inspired costumes.

Taste some festive offerings.
