2016 was an excellent year for travel. Before entering 2017, let’s look at a few of the best travel experiences of the year.
Travel blogging is a unique and surreal experience. Every little bit of travel is looked at differently than the regular traveller. You digest the places you visit individually, trying to capture little information and colour. Instead of devouring the food, you taste and experience every little flavour. You mingle with the locals and try to understand their character. Travel is a whole new ball game.
It was a great year of travel. 2017 promises another great year with brand-new destinations and experiences bound to be had. But before bounding into the new year and saying goodbye to 2016, Let’s look at some of the experiences that need to be told or retold in this instance.
Fair Dinkum Traveller’s Top 5 Travel Experiences in 2016
Exploring the world and experiencing different cultures, landscapes, historic sites, and wildlife is one of the most rewarding habits I picked up in 2016. As such, I’m excited to share my top 5 travel experiences this year!
1. Entering the border at DMZ Korea
Getting close to North Korea’s border was an experience I’ll never forget. Entering the demilitarised Zone and into the famous blue buildings was spine-tingling.
Armed North Korean soldiers could be seen staring directly at us, protecting their side and barely any further than a hundred metres away from where we stood on the south side of the border. I couldn’t help but keep my eyes fixated on the soldiers.
In terms of safety, it was never an issue. As a group, we were well protected from the large numbers of South Korean and American soldiers surrounding the group. If you are ever in South Korea, ensure the DMZ is on the list.
2. Kayaking Angthong
The amazing Angthong National Marine Park was a fantastic experience. Kayaking in the calm waters of the Gulf of Thailand was mesmerising and as beautiful as life could get.
If you’re planning a trip to Koh Samui and looking for an unforgettable experience, look no further than the Angthong National Marine Park. With crystal clear waters and unique islands, there’s no better way to spend a day than paddling alongside your loved ones.
Whether you’re a seasoned paddler or a beginner, this experience will surely stick with you. And with tours readily available, you can easily find the perfect excursion for your needs. So why wait? Book your Angthong tour today and create memories that will last a lifetime.
3. Mai Samui the love resort
The Mai Samui Beach and Spa Resort provided a romantic haven for the perfect tenth wedding anniversary, with 5-star service. The attentive staff was ready to fulfil any need, while lavish accommodations welcomed guests into spacious rooms filled with luxury amenities.
At night, couples dined on mouthwatering cuisine by candlelight either beachside or at one of the fine restaurants – before indulging in stunning cocktails poolside beneath a bright sky! To further enhance their escape from reality, they enjoyed a couples spa treatment that left them feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.
It was all made possible thanks to this unforgettable resort experience!
4. Camping at Guilderton in WA
If you haven’t yet experienced the great outdoors in Guilderton, Western Australia, you’re missing out on something special. A short hour away from Perth, this little town is a paradise for those who love swimming, kayaking, and hiking. But what sets Guilderton apart is the stunning view where the Indian Ocean meets Moore River.
It’s a sight that will leave you breathless and make you feel like you’re living on a postcard. And if you’re worried about sleeping under the stars, fear not. Guilderton is far from dull or plain-Jane camping. So take my word for it – add Guilderton to your list of must-visit places in WA, and make memories that will last a lifetime.
5. Walking the grounds of Gyeongbokgung Palace
I was in awe before the sprawling Gyeongbokgung Palace, Seoul’s grandest tower, as if to rival its centuries-old buildings and temples for beauty shared a proud yet sometimes tragic history that provided an electrifying atmosphere.
The immaculate parklands took my breath away as I strolled through the palace grounds. The serene water features throughout the landscape were picture-perfect, making for an unforgettable experience. And if that wasn’t enough, my day was completed by an afternoon of traditional Korean song and dance on stage at Geonghoeru.
The ancient courtyard provided the perfect backdrop for this cultural spectacle, and I felt privileged to witness it firsthand. The beauty and history of this palace were truly awe-inspiring, and I highly recommend adding it to your must-see list if you’re ever in the area.
2016 was an incredible journey for me – from new memories and exotic destinations to unique opportunities, it exceeded all expectations!
From my journey to paradise in Thailand, which was filled with incredible sights and unique activities, to the culture-rich trip I took in South Korea, which allowed me to appreciate another part of the world completely, then rounding it all off with a beautiful exploration of my home state Western Australia – I can honestly say that it was one of the best years of my life.
The variety of experiences and cultures also helped me expand my horizons and bring me closer to nature. I feel exceptionally fortunate to have had these moments throughout 2016, and I’m grateful for each moment that made up this fantastic year!
