Low budget and low cost, it’s what all travellers seek in life, to travel more frequently, and Air Asia often delivers a budget trip for all frequent flyers who are trying to jet-set and save dollars.

The question is, how much more can you possibly save with an Air Asia flight? On the same occasions, it’s hundreds of dollars, especially if you book your ticket at the right time and plan. It’s my usual carrier when heading into Asia from Australia and generally, I save big, which means I can travel more often and for that, I can not complain.

Let’s hop into it and show you how to save big when flying with Air Asia. Just show you know, this is not a sponsored post, it’s just an airline I often use to get around to different destinations in Asia.

How to travel cheaper with Air Asia and Travel More Frequently

Wait for the Mega Sale

About three times a year, Air Asia will come out with their early bird Air Asia Mega Sale. A massive sale where you can save a ridiculous amount of money. It comes in the form of getting in early and grabs the cheap seats while they are available. So if the plan is to go on a holiday from at least six months out, then this is the go for you. The Mega sale is perfect for school holidays too, where Air Asia does not discriminate as the prices remain at a crazy low price. Be quick, however, as they are the first seats to be snapped up.

Subscribe to the Air Asia email list

Air Asia often are producing good specials to different destinations outside the Mega sale, for example, one-off specials into Bali or Phuket. Not always as good as a deal as the mega sale, but still cheaper than a lot of other airlines and if you receive alerts on your email, you can keep in the know.

Can you get by with hand luggage?

Now, you can’t always get away with travelling with only hand luggage or a backpack, because sometimes you need to pack large. If you can live without putting large amounts of baggage underneath the plane, you’ll save a substantial amount of money. Air Asia often charge about $56 for twenty kilos of baggage for a one way trip, and more if you are travelling further. So ask yourself the question, will hand luggage do for this particular trip? Because you will save at least a hundred bucks at a minimum if you can.

Choose a seat or perhaps not

Another way Air Asia bring up the prices on your air ticket is to charge you for selecting a position. Normally $19 for one leg, double for return and extra again if catching a second plane to your destination. Of course, extra, if you choose to sit in the quiet zone, stretch your legs on the flat-bed or have extra leg space in the safety exit aisles.

This probably can’t be avoided if travelling with children, but if you are flying by yourself or with a partner, you can save again by allowing Air Asia to pick the seat for you when you go to check in.

Alternatively, Two weeks before your flight is scheduled to depart, Air Asia open up their web check-in, where you are given a seat at the time, and if done early enough, you are usually seated with the person you are travelling with. But never fear if you aren’t seated together and want to, you get the opportunity to select a seat at a dramatically reduced price when doing the web check-in.

Can you last the trip without a feed?

As you are probably aware of, Air Asia charge you separately if you want an in-flight meal, which you can do by pre-ordering when you book the flight or purchasing a meal during your trip. Air Asia don’t let you take outside food on board, but some travellers do try their luck as it is easy to sneak food in and generally, but not always, the staff don’t say anything. So if you can last your trip without a feed, again you can save a few good dollars on your flight.

Take on board an Electronic Device

Of course, Air Asia don’t offer complimentary in-flight service, that comes at a price with a few selections of in-flight entertainment. The problem is easily solved to cure your boredom in the air by bringing your electronic device on your journey, such as, a Ipad, laptop computer or your own smartphone for entertainment, as most travellers generally do when flying with the low-budget carrier.

Check out with your PayPal account?

Using your PayPal account when paying for your flight at the time of booking online, cuts $10 off the fee when other forms of payment, for example, a credit card offers a $10 surcharge. So, if you have a PayPal account handy add the appropriate credit card, you will use to purchase the flight and save yourself unnecessary surcharges.

Air Asia may be a low budget airline it can also be low in dollars when paying for your flight, but if not careful the price can hike significantly before you get to the checkout with all the extra services that can be added to your trips such as baggage and meal services. Therefore, before you go adding every little thing offered to you, first ask yourself the question, do I need it for this flight?
