2019 happened to be a year where I saw incredible destinations and scenic beauty!

Highlights included the breathtaking Himalayan mountains of Nepal, the incredible heritage buildings of Malacca, the stunning coastal city of Miri and many other stunning destinations within Asia and Australia.

However, amongst a long list of highlights, it’s a unique city of Southeast Asia that caught my attention throughout a busy year of travel.

Kuching city of the Sarawak state in Borneo had my heart from the moment I landed in the city from Kuala Lumpur. It fulfilled my energy levels throughout the entirety of the trip.

Surprisingly, the wonderful outdoors of the Stunning Bako National Park and the gorgeous Sarawak River wasn’t the critical factor that kept me intrigued; of course, those natural beauties were a sight to behold.

The fact that Kuching shares a common theme with the cat animal and is evident throughout the city wherever you wander is a fascination to behold during your travels in the Borneo destination.

Stepping into a Unique Kuching Cat City in the Sarawak State - Borneo

It’s indeed a Kuching Cat City.

Don’t get me wrong; I am not what you would call a “cat person,” not that I have anything against the loveable feline; it’s just how it rolls.

Therefore, my fascination with a city dedicated to cats comes as a surprise and anyone who knows me.

You see, I went to Kuching with the unknown, except I knew the surrounding area had so much natural beauty with an abundance of National Parks.

Therefore, on my first morning walk in the city, cats' fascination truly hit you with many Cat statues, symbols of the feline and stray cats throughout the laidback city streets.

It had me thinking, what is the deal with Kuching and Cats? Well, a bit of research was required.

It makes simple sense when you know why?

The word Kuching in the Malay language translates to a cat. While it’s said to be unsure why the city initially chose the name, in modern times, it certainly has embraced the feline name, whether it’s a friendly domestic cat or a fearsome tiger.

Many of the world’s population loves cats, and when someone is selecting a new and unique destination to visit, Cat City may top the list of a traveller’s bucket list.

The City of Kuching is not only about cats, but there are also plenty of wonderful attractions to visit.

A Scenic Walk to Remember

What else can you expect on a boutique island, and that is a scenic walk with stunning views. Whether it's back towards the mainland looking at Rockingham or further west towards the Indian Ocean, you'll be mesmerised on several occasions.

From the moment you get off the ferry, you'll get off on the boardwalk that leads you to all corners of the Island, albeit a 300-metre stretch of sand that is beautiful, to say the least on the Western side of the Island.

During the walk, you'll come across, not only scenic views but ample beaches, plenty of species of birds and a high lookout tower where you can appreciate everything around you.

Many species of birds call Penguin Island.

In fact, during the warm summer months, it becomes challenging to find Penguins outside the discovery centre, for they are either hidden in the shade or out hunting in the ocean. Although I can assure you, many penguins do live on the Island, hence the name.

On the Island, you'll see a range of birds, with many seagulls, pelicans, black-winged stilt and red-capped plover, to name a few.

Penguins are not the only birds to see.

Beach Fishing for those who love to throw in a rod

Under the laws of the Western Australian fishing regulations, fishing is allowed on the Island with people coming to Shoalwater Marine Park to fish off the boat or along the sands of the beach.

Daily visitors can take the fishing rod aboard the ferry, then make your way to the Western side of the Island to try your hand in reeling in a few fish for the night' dinner. Don't forget your esky!

A picnic lunch with shade with stunning views

Penguin Island hasn't got a lot of shade, it's an open island with shrubs and limited trees, but outside the Discovery Centre, you'll see a patch of lawn with several trees offering shade.

Please remember, there are no bins on the Island, so take the rubbish with you.
