The island’s weather is characterized by two main seasons: the hot, dry season from February to May and the monsoon season from late May to October.

Money matters when visiting Koh Samui, Thailand–it’s not just about alluring sunsets and exotic culture. With smart money moves, you can focus on soaking in paradise, knowing your wallet is safe! Planning for currency exchange rates and ATMs will help make the trip successful.

As Thailand’s national currency is the Thai baht, wise travellers should consider exchanging their currency for baht before leaving home. ATMs are available throughout Koh Samui. However, these can often carry additional fees depending on the provider, so it is essential to check first.

Koh Samui on a Budget – How to Save those Few Extra Dollars

Koh Samui on a Budget – How to Save those Few Extra Dollars

Koh Samui on a budget

Koh Samui on a budget; is it even possible? Of course, it is; anywhere in Thailand can be done cheaply, including the trendy island tourists dream of coming to for the perfect escape in paradise. The problem is affordability; once you have paid for your flights, ferry trip and luxury accommodation, the budget can be a little thin for the rest of your trip to Koh Samui. However, with some planning, enjoying this stunning island without breaking the bank is possible.

With careful planning, enjoying a truly unforgettable experience on Koh Samui without blowing your budget is possible. For starters, plenty of free activities, such as spending time on one of the many beautiful beaches or hiking through the verdant jungle. In addition, plenty of cheap eateries offer delicious Thai food at a fraction of the price you would pay in a hotel restaurant.

Saving money for your Koh Samui holidays can be easy if you follow a few simple steps, which I used when venturing onto the island. Sometimes you will need to be bullish and polite and stand your ground in the process but in a way where you respect the local’s customs and values.

Koh Samui on a Budget – How to Save Those Few Extra Dollars

Koh Samui is a beautiful island in Thailand that is perfect for a tropical getaway in another magical Southeast Asia destination. However, it can be easy to overspend while you’re on vacation. Here are a few handy tips if you want to save money on your trip to Koh Samui.

Is Koh Samui Cheap?

The answer to this question is subjective and depends on your definition of “cheap.” Koh Samui will not be cheap if you look for luxury accommodations and five-star restaurants. However, if you are willing to rough it and eat at local eateries, you can find affordable housing and food options.

Generally, prices on Koh Samui are higher than in other parts of Thailand but lower than in some other popular tourist destinations in Southeast Asia. So, if you are looking for a cheap vacation destination, Koh Samui may not be the best option. However, if you are willing to spend more money, you can find excellent accommodation and activities deals.

How much spending money for Koh Samui

How much is spending money for Koh Samui required when travelling? Well, it’s like asking how long is a piece of string. Every traveller has unique spending habits, so it’s impossible to give a definitive answer.

However, there are a few things that you should keep in mind when budgeting for your trip. First, consider the cost of accommodation and transportation. These are typically the most significant travel expenses, so factoring them into your budget is essential. Second, think about what you like to do on holiday. You must budget accordingly if you enjoy dining out and exploring local attractions.

Lastly, don’t forget to account for unexpected expenses. No matter how well you plan, there’s always a chance that something you didn’t anticipate will come up. By keeping these things in mind, you can better understand how much spending money you’ll need for your trip to Koh Samui.

Take a ride on the back of the ute – Tuc Tuc Style.

Getting aboard on the back of a sheltered ute with wooden seating on the sides doesn’t sound too comfortable, but the tuc-tuc style of transportation can be found everywhere on the island. And it costs half the price of a taxi! The main point is that this unique form of transportation is safe, as the driver goes along the dodgy roads of Samui at reasonable speeds.

The wooden seating is comfortable for the short time you are travelling. Plus, you get a refreshing cool breeze which is as good as an air conditioner. This is much appreciated as you travel from shopping malls to your Koh Samui Resorts.

The Ute mode of transportation won’t take you to your intended destination, as it only travels along the main road and doesn’t veer off track to take you directly to your planned location. But it’s a great way to see the island and experience a unique form of transportation!

Don’t get bullied by the taxi driver.

Taking a taxi around Koh Samui can be a bit of an adventure. Unlike the rest of Thailand, taxis on the island are not metered. This can make tourists feel uncomfortable and worry about getting ripped off.

The best way to handle this is not to take the first price offered by the taxi driver. Instead, drop it down by at least 100 baht. If the driver refuses, move on to the next taxi.

There are no shortages of taxis on the island, so you’re sure to find one willing to accept your offer. By haggling in this way, you can ensure you get a fair price for your ride.

Book a cruise or day tour on the streets of Chaweng

As any seasoned traveller knows, one of the best ways to save money on vacation is to book tours and activities in advance. But what if you’re looking for a last-minute deal?

In that case, head to Chaweng, the main tourist town on the island of Koh Samui. There you’ll find travel agency booths lining the street, where you can find great deals on the same-day tours and cruises offered at the resort for a fraction of the price. So whether you’re looking to save money or score a great deal, remember to head to Chaweng when planning your next trip to Koh Samui.

Another option is to book a tour online; the power of Google will take you where you need to go, and it’s another big money saver which is just as reputable.

Barter travellers, BARTER at the markets!

No price tags on the merchandise in stores generally mean only one thing, the shop owner will try and get every penny out of you by driving the prices up. As is the case with the taxis, you need to attempt to barter the price down, and if the shop owner does not come to the party, the chances are the very same product is for sale at a lower price down the road.

In most circumstances, it won’t come down to you leaving the shop. Eventually, the staff member will give as they want your money. Please remember, during any bartering, show respect and do not be rude; at the end of the day, we only discuss cutting the price by a few measly dollars.

Beer is cheap, so drink up responsibly.

Resort beer is a lot more expensive than the drinks served in a bar on the beach or the bars on the main city streets, and that even includes the resorts’ happy hours. So avoid the seduction of a five-hour happy hour and head for a cheap and cold beer or delicious cocktails. Most Koh Samui Beach Resorts will have a privately-owned bar near your accommodation, even if the resort you are staying at is isolated. Beryl Bar near Mai Samui Resort was a real winner for me.

Be sure to take advantage of the great deals on beer at the supermarkets. You can save 50% off resort prices by purchasing your beer at the supermarket. Just be sure to check the liquor laws before you buy, as you cannot purchase alcohol in supermarkets or seven-eleven stores between 2 pm and 5 pm. But don’t worry; you can still enjoy a refreshing beer at the bar, restaurant or resort. So

Take Advantage of Free Activities in Koh Samui

Are you holidaying at Koh Samui on a budget? No problem! You can take advantage of the island’s many free activities, such as spending time on the beach or exploring the local markets. It doesn’t end there; you can take beautiful walks along the shores and visit a few waterfalls.

The Thai Island has many activities to take your fancy, and if you stay at the right resort, they may have a few moves, like beach activities, Yoga sessions and fitness classes, which you can do at no extra charge.

Save your dough at Koh Samui Restaurants too.

Now the resort dining prices, at least where I stayed, were pretty good compared to resorts in Australia or other places worldwide. However, Koh Samui food prices are affordable and go to another level if you get out of the resort and into the restaurants nearby, where you can save 50 per cent on outside meals.

In further good news, the food outside the resort can be just as good as the food in the resorts, as the locals can cook a bloody good meal and take a lot of pride in their work.

Another information for eating options in Samui is the street food stalls, especially in Chaweng. The stalls are affordable, and the cooked food is healthy and shouldn’t leave you with a stomach bug, although I cannot guarantee that.

Stay at Koh Samui Budget Hotels

You don’t always have to stay in lavish resorts in Koh Samui; you can choose to stay in budget hotels at an affordable price that is clean and comfortable and will still give you that luxury feel. You can consider staying in a guesthouse or hostel instead of a hotel.

There are many affordable options available that will still provide you with comfortable accommodations. So check out Booking.com  and find your ideal and reasonable Koh Samui budget accommodation on the island. That means you can spend your money elsewhere.

There you have a few pointers on how to stay in Koh Samui on a budget and save a few extra dollars that can be spent elsewhere on the island or perhaps put away for another holiday down the track. For now, let’s live it up in paradise.

The Tsunami Museum from 2004

The 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami was one of the deadliest natural disasters in history, devastating coastal communities in Southeast Asia and killing more than 230,000 people. Among the hardest hit areas was Khao Lak, Thailand, where many towns were destroyed, and thousands of people lost their lives.

Khao Lak has been rebuilt and is once again a thriving beach community. However, the memory of the 2004 Tsunami remains fresh in the minds of those who lived through it. As a reminder of that fateful day, the Town has built a museum dedicated to the event.

The museum displays photos, videos, and information about the Tsunami and its aftermath. It is a sobering reminder of the devastation that Mother Nature can cause – but also a testament to the strength and resilience of the human spirit.

A  journey into a beautiful part of Thailand is simply a must with these lovely things to do in Phang Nga Bay.

Getting to Phang Nga Bay Bay

Getting to Phang Nga Bay is easily accessible by either speed boat, private charter or longboat.

During a family outing to Phang Nga Bay, we took the longboat option, and the first impression of the old wooden boat was hardly reassuring at first sight; it did appear to have seen better days. Don’t judge on appearance alone because these longboats are built strong and can handle the rigours of the ocean.

From entering the longboat, it was all about the exceptional surroundings, as the boat moved smoothly and steadily by the local village, out past the mangroves and into Phang Nga Bay, where several islands and islets were waiting spectacularly to be seen.

Check out Fair Dinkum Traveller’s own Khao Lak Diaries for different experiences in The Bay.

Go Canoeing through the shady Mangroves.

What an experience to canoe amongst the mangroves as the day trip ramps up another level.

It’s time to relax as the locals take charge of the situation with an oar in hand and give their guests a serene moment amongst the mangroves and the limestone cave. It’s natural beauty at its very best.

Just chill, take photos and give the local guide a rest at times by taking the oars away and having a go at paddling in the calm waters yourself. The focus may be kind enough to make a bit of hand-made flower for their female guest, quite the little charmers.

Once the 60-minute canoe trip is up and you have finished marvelling at what is around you, pay a little tip for the friendly guide and then it’s off to the following location in The Bay.

Entering the Islands of Phang Nga Bay Thailand

Once you are done canoeing the mangroves, it’s back on the old longboat, where it’s time to go further into Phang Nga Bay and gaze at the surrounding islands as you set sail to the next port of call.

Many boats of all shapes and sizes will go by, and even at times, you will wish you were on the luxury cruise lines that are in close distance. It won’t bother you much, because, for a cheaper rate, you are still out in paradise enjoying another precious day in Southeast Asia.

It’s to check out a few of the incredible things to do in Phang Nga Bay.

The Picturesque James Bond Island

You may have seen the 1974 James Bond Film “The Man with the Golden Gun” now you can visit a part of movie history by visiting the delightful James Bond Island, properly known as Khao Phing Kan.

A tourist phenomenon, a tour to James Bond Island is relatively short, too short. Still, there is time enough to make the most of the opportunity by taking a dip in the bay, amongst a few other activities on the small island.

You can explore the boutique markets and perhaps buy an expensive cool drink or ice cream. Then it’s time to capture a few memorable moments by getting the camera out and clicking pictures of the island, especially the famous islet out in the middle (Ko Tapu).

Visit the Panyee Island – A Floating Village

It’s amazing to cruise along the waters of Phang Nga Bay and stumble upon a floating village that appears out of nowhere. A town built off a small island (Panyee Island), where locals eat, sleep, work, and the kids get educated.

For the locals, it’s everyday life; for you and me, the tourist, it’s eye-opening. You can spend a fair amount of time exploring the floating village, which is stacked with marketplaces, restaurants, a mosque (a village for Thai Muslims), and even a primary school with a concrete soccer field. Hey, it’s the prettiest location to have a soccer match.

It capped off the time in Phang Nga Bay perfectly to see a unique location. Today, Panyee Island is a tourist hotspot, and the locals dress it up that way. Even then, it doesn’t take away from the experience of visiting such a different Thailand attraction.

Are you heading to Phuket? Check out Phang Nga Bay and its beautiful attractions; it promises to be a busy day out; you can even book sensational island tours with Klook and save big!

Top Reasons to Visit Thailand

Top Reasons to Visit Thailand include visiting the most beautiful nature you’ll ever see.

Top Reasons to Visit Thailand

Thailand is a Southeast Asian country located smack dab in the middle of Indochina. No wonder this lush, green, and mountainous country is often called the “land of smiles.” From its stunning beaches and historied temples to its delicious food and friendly people, there are many reasons to visit Thailand.

The Food

If you think about it, it’s funny how people say they LOVE Thai food when they haven’t been to Thailand… The reality is that if you’ve never been to Thailand, then you haven’t experienced Thai food. Everything from the spices and flavours to the aromas and variety of dishes, Thai food is an experience you can’t get anywhere else.

According to the Thai Phuket Academy, Thai food’s characteristics depend on who cooks it, who it’s for, where it’s cooked, and what type of occasion it is. That is why it’s so important to visit Thailand to experience the authenticity of the flavours.

Some of the best food you’ll experience in Thailand is street food. Street stalls all over the streets serve up some of the best food you’ve ever tasted. The most recognizable food is the tom yum soup, sold in many stalls around the city. One of the best parts about street food is that it’s relatively inexpensive (like most of the country) and can be an excellent way to get over those early travel jitters.

Fast Internet For Expats Digital Nomads

Regarding digital nomads and expats, Thailand ranks as one of the top places in the world. Whether you want to work remotely with your job or looking to build an online store, Thailand is a great place to do so.

Did you know Thailand’s internet speed is the eighth fastest in Asia? That is also why there are so many co-working spaces to accommodate digital nomads. Bangkok and Chiang Mai are some of the top locations where co-working holes exist.

The Stunning Beaches of Thailand

Thailand has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and it’s by far Thailand’s most impressive natural features. The coastline stretches over 1,500 miles, so you’re never too far from casual walks along the beach.

Now you can visit the “touristy” beaches in popular areas like Phuket, but instead of going there, you should skip Phuket and go to Khao Lak. Khao Lak is one of the most precious islands in the entire country and is more laid back and relaxed than some of the other overcrowded areas.

But if you’re looking to enjoy the parties and the hustle and bustle of the country, then the beaches of Phuket and Samui are where you want to visit. That’s where you’ll find lots of beachside clubs and parties.

If you’re looking for fun, leisurely ways to enjoy the beaches, most have places to rent kayaks, and canoes, go snorkelling or work on your tan. You really can’t go wrong with any of the beaches in Thailand.

Visit the Captivating Inland Destinations of Thailand

Thailand is well-known for its stunning beach destinations, but it also has a lot to offer visitors looking to explore its inland areas.

Chiang Rai is one of the most captivating inland destinations in Thailand. Nestled in the northernmost part of the country, Chiang Rai is home to several fascinating sights and activities. Visitors can explore the numerous temples and markets that dot the city or take a boat ride down the River Kok to see the beautiful scenery. Chiang Rai is also an excellent base for exploring the countryside, with several nature trails and national parks within easy reach. So if you’re looking for something different from the usual beach holiday, add Chiang Rai to your list of places to visit in Thailand.

Chiang Mai is a popular destination for tourists who want to experience Thailand’s culture and natural beauty. The city is located in the mountainous northern region of the country, and it is home to many temples, including Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, one of Thailand’s most important Buddhist sites. Visitors can also enjoy the city’s vibrant nightlife, as well as its numerous markets and shops. Nature lovers will appreciate the nearby national parks and forests offering hiking, camping, and birdwatching opportunities. Whether you’re looking for relaxation or adventure, Chiang Mai has something to offer everyone.

Lampang, meanwhile, is known for its traditional architecture and beautiful temples. The Wat Phra That Lampang Luang is especially worth a visit, as it is one of the most important temples in the province. Regardless of your interests, inland Thailand has something to offer everyone.

The nature of Thailand is impressive.

Did you know Thailand is home to over 10% of the world’s animals? It shouldn’t surprise you simply because Thailand’s forests cover 25% of the land. These plentiful forests are home to nearly 300 species, including leopards, Malaysian sun bears, gibbons, and elephants. And these forests aren’t just housing lions, tigers, and bears.

The country has beautiful national parks like Khao Sok National Park and Khao Yai National Park. The remarkable aspect of these different parks is that one is more for sightseeing, and the other is more geared toward watching wildlife. Khao Sok is a more peaceful park that’s good for birdwatching. Khao Yai is a little wilder, where you can watch wild boars, elephants, and porcupines. So whether you’re looking to relax or get up close and personal with some of Thailand’s unique animals, there’s a national park for you!

Meet and Greet the Friendliest People.

Thai people are some of the friendliest in the world. You’ll be greeted with a smile wherever you go, and locals will go out of their way to help you. This is one of the things that makes Thailand such a great place to visit.

Whether you’re looking for directions, advice on where to eat, or just someone to chat with, you’ll always find a friendly Thai person happy to help. And once you get to know them, you’ll quickly realize that Thai people are some of the most fun-loving and warm-hearted people you’ll ever meet.

So if you’re ever feeling homesick while travelling through the country, remember that there’s always a Thai person who would be happy to give you a big friendly greeting.

The Palaces and Temples

Regarding ornate, impressive palaces and temples, Thailand has you covered with over 40,000 Buddhist temples. One of the most spectacular temple attractions is the Grand Palace, located in Bangkok. The palace is simply enormous, as it covers almost 220,000 square meters. Most guides tell you to plan 3-4 hours at the court. You’ll need your walking shoes.

Each Thailand province has its share of ancient temples, but the thing to notice is its architecture. A temple’s architecture directly represents the construction style from the era it was built, most of which date back to different dynasties. So, as you visit various temples, try to pay attention to the architecture of each and see if you can tell any architectural differences in each one.

Easy and Affordable Travel in Thailand

Whether you’re visiting or relocating, Thailand is a highly affordable destination. Everything from food and transportation to accommodations and the cost of living is reasonably priced for most people.

Regarding transportation, many people can choose to go by train, but the best way to get around in Thailand is by tuk-tuk! You can’t go to Thailand without riding a tuk-tuk at least once – it’s a must-do experience.

Tuk-tuks are relatively cheap and convenient, so they’re ideal for getting around the city. Depending on the location, an apartment can run you as little as $300 a month, possibly a little more. Overall, Thailand is an affordable and budget-friendly destination for travellers.

Phuket and Khao Lak are two of Thailand’s most popular tourist destinations. Phuket is renowned for its beaches, while Khao Lak is known for its natural beauty. However, Phuket is also crowded and expensive, while Khao Lak is relatively undeveloped. As a result, many visitors to Thailand skip Phuket and head straight for Khao Lak. Khao Lak is a delight for tourists who want to experience real Thailand. The town is small and quiet, with a laid-back atmosphere. The beaches here are pristine, and there are plenty of opportunities for swimming, snorkelling and kayaking. In addition, Khao Lak is surrounded by jungle-covered hills, which offer fantastic hiking and biking trails. Best of all, accommodation and food in Khao Lak are very affordable.
