Hotels V Camping: Who is Your Winner?

Hotels V camping, I hear you now, is this "really" a debate? One is possibly a luxury stay by the swimming pool with a cocktail. The other is packing the ute, setting up a tent and roughing it out of a bush while relaxing under the stars and listening to sounds of nature hovering nearby.

No contest, right?

Well, it all depends on who you ask. Some are passionate hotel travellers who couldn't think of anything worse than getting their hands dirty and sleeping with the snakes. Vice versa, there are the real rednecks of the world, who love nothing more than roughing it in the sticks, [easyazon_link identifier=" B01881TL3Y" locale=" US" tag=" fdt0c-20"]pitching the tent[/easyazon_link] and giving their 4WD a workout.

As for me, the author, I do both, so why don't we go over the pros and cons of each option, then decide a winner in the battle of hotels v camping.

Camping

Pros:

Affordability: Camping costs next to nothing; in some areas, it's free. But even if you are camping in style in a powered site at a Holiday Park, you will be saving a heap of cash.
Family time: Nothing reunites a busy family more than a camping trip. It excites the kids as they play on the sticks, swim in the river and roast marshmallows by a fire. It is family bonding better than ever.
An adventure: A [easyazon_link identifier= "1502419149" locale=" US" tag=" fdt0c-20"]camping trip[/easyazon_link] is an adventure as you explore the beautiful surroundings around you, get lost in the wilderness and discover new skills you never knew existed.
Take in nature: The beauty of being outdoors amongst the untouched nature and stunning surroundings.
Convenient: A camping trip can be decided on a whim. Load up the car and head out for a quick weekend getaway.

Cons:

Sleeping: A good night's sleep can be hard on the rock-hard dirt floor. Especially without a decent mattress to support you. This issue can somewhat be solved if you purchase a decent[easyazon_link identifier="B000HBIL9O" locale="US" tag="fdt0c-20"]camp bed[/easyazon_link] or mattress.
Cooking: No room service out in the sticks; you will need to do it all yourselves, breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Washing up: After cooking comes the washing up. Always an arduous task when camping but an unavoidable chore.
Showering: If you're camping in a holiday park, you'll have the luxury of a communal shower, which is a bonus. At some camping sites, you will need to bathe in the river. If you are camping by the river, of course, but in some cases, you need to really "rough it." Or purchase a portable shower and toilet from a camping store.
Hot and sweaty: Camping is usually most popular during the summer. With no air-conditioner, no fans, keeping cool is only possible by swimming in the fresh rivers or beaches.
Mosquitoes: Mozzies, bugs and flies. Probably the biggest downfall of camping. Expect to spend some time with those pests, and don't forget your repellent.

Hotels

Pros:

Luxury: Hotels can be luxury, depending on where you stay. Sit back and relax in style; you are on holiday; click on the TripAdvisor link to find your perfect hotel or resort.
Fine Dining: No cooking is required in your hotel room. Dine out in the hotel's restaurants or many restaurants near your hotel. Oh, and room service can be an option too.

Swimming pools: And where better to drink your cocktails than by a swimming pool as you sunbake on the layout and dip in the pool in-between.
No cleaning up: Let the friendly staff clean up your beds and makeup room while you go out and enjoy the surrounds of the area where you are staying.
Comfortable beds: Most times, sleeping in a hotel is convenient. The chances are you will have a much better sleep in the comfort of your hotel room without squatting those mozzies away.

Cons:

Expensive: Hotels can be costly, and so are excellent dining and drinking cocktails by the pool. Be prepared to break the bank account.
Sorry, there aren't too many negatives to staying in a hotel. Unless you find a horror stay, that is what TripAdvisor is for, so you can review your potential hotels.

Camping is great, don't doubt it. And I will continue to sleep in the great outdoors for time o come. Not only because it is affordable exercise, but it's also great for kids and a great way to give them valuable outside time away from their fancy toys.

However, I would choose a hotel stay in pure luxury every day of the week and twice on Sundays. You can't beat the comforts of a bed inside the four walls, with a private bathroom, room service and swimming pool below as you drink your cocktails.

So, your Fair Dinkum Traveller winner on this occasion is hotels. And by a bit of a margin. But that is just my choice, and options are always divided.

Seven Reasons Why People Have the Fear and Avoid Travelling Abroad

Travelling abroad can be rewarding and daunting, with many people citing fear as the main factor for avoiding foreign voyages. This anxiety could be provoked by various reasons such as financial constraints, language barriers and unfamiliar customs - to name but a few. Even the most avid adventurers may find themselves avoiding such trips due to a concern for their safety, physical health or mental well-being.

Other inhibitions include potential discomfort from climate change, unknown dish expectations or difficulty understanding international laws or taxation regulations. For those who have never stepped foot outside of their own country, this mystery can be difficult to conquer without support from someone in the know.

Chances are, if you're uncomfortable about travelling abroad - you're not alone, and here are several reasons why people fear and avoid travelling abroad!

1. Terrorism

Terrorism has been a lurking threat for far too long, making us all feel like the world is infinitely more dangerous. It's terrible that we must be so careful when travelling - going anywhere near home or abroad carries risks. It can make one very uneasy without taking any control over them within our reach.

It's easy to get consumed by the fear of terrorism and curl up in a corner, but that would only be giving them what they want--satisfaction. So instead, I choose to enjoy life despite any risks or dangers, going with the flow and travelling wherever my spirit leads me! Not only does this provide joy and peace for me, but it also means Terrorists are not getting exactly what they aimed for -and that is something worth celebrating.

2. Fear of flying

Whether it be due to turbulence or an overall sense of unease in unfamiliar territory, fear of flying has become a shared experience among countless individuals. For many of us, the mere thought of boarding a plane is enough to send shivers down our spine! It's okay -- we all have concerns that might seem silly when presented out loud, so don't feel ashamed if this one hits close to home for you.

The counter-argument to fear of flying:

In the face of a seemingly impossible fear, I don't have all the answers - I'm no psychologist. But just because someone may be afraid to fly doesn't mean they can't travel! Whether exploring local spots in your backyard or going on an epic road trip adventure near you, there are plenty of ways to give yourself new experiences without getting on a plane.

And if ever-present apprehension takes hold before doing something scary like flying overseas? Here's some food for thought: crossing roads and driving cars daily is statistically more dangerous than catching that flight abroad! So why not seize any opportunity for an unforgettable international journey this year?

3. Too busy to travel

Don't get me wrong - having obligations is a must-do! With all the chaos of work, home repairs and family engagements happening around me, I'm always finding an excuse not to partake in celebrations. But why do so many people allow them to avoid holiday festivities? That's one mystery that has yet to be solved.

I'm all about finding ways to make life more enjoyable. That's why I believe in travel's power: immersing yourself in new cultures, creating lifelong memories and indulging your inner adventurer! 4. The Language Barrier

As an adventurous traveller, I'm always up for exploring the unknown. But when it comes to visiting a foreign country and facing language barriers, even I can feel apprehensive about being entirely out of my element with no way to communicate!

Although pushing myself outside of my comfort zone is definitely recommended (and sometimes necessary!), not knowing if you'll be able to get help from locals in case something happens understandably presents difficulties during vacationing abroad.

Counter Argument to the language barrier:

I'm all about making the most of life, and I don't do it by playing it safe. My favourite way to explore a new place is headfirst – haggling over prices in marketplaces, charting my route from point A to point B (with plenty of detours), and testing out unfamiliar phrases on locals who might or might not appreciate my attempt at conversation!

Even when things get tricky, there's always help nearby - you must be willing to push through with your adventure.

5. Affordability to travel

As an adult, it can be hard to live within your limits. We all have responsibilities like bills and mortgages/rent that must be taken care of for our families to stay afloat - but too often, we overextend ourselves financially by living outside our means. That's why I'm committed to ensuring my financial decisions are sound, so I don't run into any debt-related trouble!

Counter Argument to affording to travel:

If you're looking for a getaway with the same relaxation and fun but without breaking the bank - camping is your answer! I recently decided to spend my holiday in budget accommodations close to home.

Alternatively, if travelling further appeals more, keep an eye out for flight deals occasionally: it's incredible how much money can be saved when searching smartly or having patience while waiting.

6. Fear of the Unknown

Travelling abroad can be daunting as I step into the unknown. Although it feels insurmountable, venturing out of my comfort zone is incredibly enriching and full of surprises! Exploring a different culture opens up new perspectives on life - even though there may be language barriers, fear of flying or terrorism that scares me at first thought – leaping has been worth every second!

I'm a lifelong believer that life begins outside one's comfort zone! Taking on new experiences and embracing unfamiliar cultures can be daunting, but there is no greater reward than overcoming my fears about travelling.

Flying abroad for the first time was intimidating - language barriers, fear of terrorism- yet I have discovered so much joy from seeing how other people live and finding out more about different lifestyles. It remains an invaluable experience each time as it continues to open up fresh perspectives in every aspect imaginable – it has been worth all those seconds put together!

7. People Don't like travelling

I find it unbelievable that some people don't share my enthusiasm for journeying to new and unknown places. Even though many prefer not to explore the world, I still think travelling is an enriching experience!

The recent incident involving the nine Australian men arrested in Malaysia highlights the importance of being well-prepared and showing respect when travelling to foreign countries. Although these men may have thought they were just having harmless fun, their actions were deemed offensive and disrespectful in Malaysia's culture and laws. This serves as a reminder that we must take the time to research and understand the customs and values of the countries we plan to visit.

It is important to remember that what may be acceptable in our home country may not be viewed the same way elsewhere. Being aware and respectful can help prevent similar misunderstandings from happening in the future. So, before embarking on our travels, let's do our due diligence and ensure we are well-prepared to fully embrace and respect the cultures and laws of the countries we visit.

Humour varies from culture to culture, and what may be seen as a harmless jest in one country could be considered offensive in another. In Australia, a joke that may be regarded as inappropriate would likely earn a chuckle or a scornful shake of the head from a fellow Aussie. However, in Malaysia, such jokes could lead to severe consequences. Two men were recently caught making inappropriate jokes on a popular app and now face a possible two-year jail term. The incident is an important reminder that while humour is a universal language, it is essential to be mindful of cultural sensitivities and social norms.

When travelling to a foreign land, respecting the customs and following the locals' rules is essential. Following the adage, "when in Rome, do as the Romans do," can go a long way in avoiding misunderstandings and even legal troubles. As visitors, it is not our place to judge the customs and rules of other cultures but rather to oblige and obey them. While some countries may be lenient, others can be strict to the extreme.

The recent case of an American student serving a 15-year sentence in North Korea for stealing a political poster from a hotel is a dire reminder of the importance of being mindful of local laws and customs.

The punishments in North Korea are notorious for being excessive, making it imperative for tourists to be extra cautious when travelling to this country. Even the slightest mistake could result in consequences beyond what any ordinary person would expect.

Before visiting, research and learn about the country's customs and laws. While it may seem strange at first, following the rules will allow travellers to enjoy all the incredible experiences and entertainment North Korea offers. It's not worth risking the final punishment for something easily avoided with some preparation.

So, always remember to study the rules and customs of a new place and show respect, even if they seem strange compared to what you're used to back at home.

Though there are risks around every corner, journey forth with confidence and caution to explore the fascinating wonders of our globe. May your travels be safe and full of memorable experiences!

In 2016, I encountered a North Korean Defector – way out of the ordinary. She was an extraordinary woman in her thirties who had made it to Seoul from one of the world's most oppressive regimes.

While I couldn't communicate with her directly, my South Korean wife could share some insights - and what came through is a story that illustrates true bravery and courage in the forsaking home for freedom, not only being rewarded by hope but also haunted by sadness after leaving behind everything she knew.

It changed me forever knowing this remarkable person, whose name remains unknown, sacrificed so much to provide better opportunities for herself and those she loves.

Her husband was none the wiser since he would have forbidden such an endeavour. Still, with tremendous courage and determination - coupled with help from a secret group - she crossed over into China's borders for freedom that awaited her on the other side. It must've been tough for her to keep it all hidden throughout this unforgettable journey!

As the moonlight bathed the night sky in its tranquil light, a brave mother and daughter embarked on an unforgettable journey for freedom. With her child safely tucked away under the blanket of slumber courtesy of some sleeping peels to keep her calm, this courageous woman led their small group of defectors towards safety at China's borders. After months spent pushing through daunting layers of preparation and secrecy, it was finally time to make that daring break from fear - but nothing could keep them from reaching liberation!

After making the courageous move to South Korea, she and her daughter were aided by The South Korean Government in establishing a new life for themselves. Together they embarked on their journey of success! Receiving substantial grants like an apartment, schooling opportunities, financial aid, and even employment made this transition simpler than ever expected.

On meeting this remarkable woman for what would be just once more time, it became apparent why such bravery is encouraged: even through hardship comes joy! After years of sacrifice and unwavering courage, she was rewarded with a better life without poverty. She now had the opportunity to share her story with visitors worldwide while knowing that her daughter received an education in a good school.

"He would not understand," were words spoken softly yet firmly revealing an unescapable truth: though taken apart physically by borders no man should ever cross, their love will endure always across this great divide despite all odds against them

Despite her overwhelming obstacles, this brave woman triumphed over adversity and achieved freedom. She lost her parents in a faraway land yet remains determined to reunite with them - something other North Korean defectors have either attempted or failed to achieve. Her story reminds us that no matter how difficult the journey ahead seems, fortune favours those who persevere towards their dreams! Connecting via a Chinese telecom service, which can't be traced, keeps her dream alive, inspiring hope of seeing them again despite any danger it may bring.

The South Korean Government strives to support those seeking freedom from North Korea, despite not being able to capture any images of a Defector due to security restrictions. It is evident that the Government are determined in their mission and has put safety first, ensuring both - refuge for those escaping oppression and protection against espionage attempts.
