Staying at Big 4 Denmark Ocean Beach Holiday Park – Western Australia

Staying at Big 4 Denmark Ocean Beach Holiday Park – Western Australia

Big 4 Holiday Parks is a sensation all around Australia, and the Denmark Ocean Beach Holiday Park is another fantastic holiday Park operated under the franchise.

It made my choice of Denmark Accommodation relatively easy when I got the chance to pack the tent in the car and head to the South coast of Western Australia, learning the Big 4 franchise was set up in this stunning tourist town.

The truth is, I had never stayed at a Big 4 Holiday Park before (there are only around 180 in Australia); I had heard all the rage before, and on first impressions, it didn't disappoint. It couldn't because the Big 4 get what holiday goers want and do it in style.

Augusta WA – Five Reasons to visit the Western Australian Coastal Town

Augusta WA – Five Reasons to visit the Western Australian Coastal Town

Don't get me wrong, tourist of all kinds make their way down to the South West corner, and it certainly gets its fair share of visitors. However, in a broader sense, it seems a little more neglected. For one reason or another, Augusta, WA, doesn't get the same recognition as the other tourist regions in Western Australia, a little boutique town in the corner that is every bit beautiful in many ways.

Who am I to talk and spread the message of this great little town of Augusta, Australia? I had lived in Western Australia for 12 years, and only a 2-hour drive before I finally made my way to Augusta for the first time. First impressions always last, and the first impression of this town was undoubtedly a definite beginning.

What are my reasons for being quite fond of Augusta? Well, I can give you fantastic ideas on why you must visit the charming coastal town on a Western Australian tour in the Southwest!

Augusta WA

The Blackwood River in Augusta, WA, is one of the great reasons to visit the corner town of Australia.

Six Incredible Reasons You Need to Visit Augusta, WA!

Augusta may not offer the glitz and glamour of a big city, but it still holds the incredible charm. Instead of indulging in the luxuries we're accustomed to, we can discover something equally delightful here in Augusta, WA.

The great outdoors is a true winner. Whether looking for a peaceful escape or an adventure-filled exploration, Augusta has it all. Your options are endless, from fishing to kayaking, hiking to basking in the stunning coastal views. So, go ahead and book your stay in Augusta. Trust me; there are at least five reasons you won't regret it.

Augusta WA

Let's get the nature show started within the Southwest Corner of WA.

1. That small-town feel of Augusta, WA.

It is great to drive into a regional town where the daily visitors outnumber the official population. A tiny village where nearly everyone knows each other by first name, and favours are not expected but done out of habit due to the closeness of the locals.

Augusta is a boutique, with only a small town centre containing the basics of a supermarket, Local Tavern, fish & chips shop and Chinese restaurant, amongst the basics for your everyday needs. Augusta glitters with holiday houses that rise high and overlook the Blackwood River and a stunning Boat Harbour with this natural yet splendid look.

2. The Leeuwin Lighthouse

A few kilometres south of the Augusta town centre, which is also part of a beautiful coastal drive, is the Leeuwin Lighthouse. It's one of the town's major attractions and is one of the things to do in Augusta, WA, for tourists to head out for a visit.

The Lighthouse gets approximately ninety-thousand visitors per year, and It's easy to understand its popularity when you climb to the top and see the mesmerizing views over the horizon of where the Southern and Indian Oceans meet — not forgetting the Birdseye view of Australia's South West coastline. After the climb in the Leeuwin lighthouse, you can stop in for a coffee and lunch at the Café located at the entrance.

3. Witness the Stunning coastlines of WA

As the largest state of Australia, Western Australia boasts some of the most breathtaking coastlines in the country. Augusta, in particular, is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to take in stunning views of two oceans all in one location. With its picturesque scenery and endless vistas, it's no wonder Augusta is a favourite among locals and tourists alike.

Whether you take a scenic drive or a stroll, there's no shortage of fantastic photo opportunities just waiting to be captured. So, be sure to keep your camera ready, and take your time to savour every moment of your coastal escapade.

4. A stone's throw from the Gorgeous Wineries

A South West town wouldn't be complete without a fresh look at the vineyards, and I am not talking about driving from Augusta to Margaret River because Augusta, WA, is no exception for wineries.

Only a short drive from the main town area, you can go to a couple of classy wineries,  the first being the Hamelin Bay winery, which is perfect for a spot lunch. The second winery that needs to be on the list is the Glenarty Road winery, which takes you behind the scenes of their daily operation with their daily tours.

If you're looking for an alternative to the usual tasting room experience, why not drive leisurely down Caves Road and enjoy the beautiful scenery and delicious wines? Stop in at Café Boranup for some seriously satisfying cuisine along the way. Their Chilli Chicken Burger is a must-try, but with other exquisite dishes on the menu, you'll be spoilt for choice. Take your time on your Augusta tour exploring the wineries in the area, knowing that you've got a tasty meal waiting for you at the end of your journey. Trust us; this is an alternative you won't regret.

Augusta Australia

Lunch at the wineries is always proper and comes with a view.

5. Enjoy the great outdoors of Augusta

It's an outdoor adventure haven, and the options are plenty. You can take your boat out (if you own one) and fish in the Blackwood River or the ocean. You can dip in the Blackwood before getting the Kayaks out and heading upstream for a thorough yet picturesque workout. For the hiking enthusiasts, you can hike the famous 135-kilometre cape to Cape Track, which ends or begins (depending on where you start) at the Leeuwin  Lighthouse. This hike is not for the light-hearted, but you only have to complete a little of the distance.

For those who love pitching a tent, you will find original riverside sites at Flinders Bay or Turner's Caravan Park. If luxury camping is what you are after, you can also try glamping at Boogaloo Glamping, a night of comfortable night's sleep is to be had in the luxurious tents.

Augusta, in Western Australia, is home to some of the most beautiful accommodations.

Augusta in Western Australia is ideal for those seeking an out-of-the-ordinary vacation. It stands out for its stunning accommodation choices that range from humble cottages to bespoke retreats. You can experience the luxurious comforts of glamping in the wilderness or the mesmerizing coastal views.

Regardless of your preference, you can be assured that Augusta accommodation options are the epitome of beauty and luxury. From the moment you set foot in this idyllic town, you will be transported to a world of tranquillity and serenity, where the worries of daily life seem to fade away.

As much as I'd like to convince you with my words, there truly is no better way to understand the beauty of Augusta, Western Australia, than to experience it for yourself. As an authority on travel, I've seen my fair share of stunning destinations, and Augusta is no exception. Trust me when I say that this underrated spot is worth the trip.

My day with Tipsy Tours

I would be remised not to mention my day with Tipsy Tours. I toured in style in their luxury vehicle and explored the beautiful Augusta region.

I had the privilege of visiting some excellent places with breathtaking views. A winery or two, of course, was on the agenda, and yes, I may have dabbled in a bit of wine. Lunch was included amongst the stunning backdrop of the tall trees in the Forest Grove National Park at Café Boranup.

Tipsy tours

My day out and about with Tipsy Tours.

This was an overview of my day with Tipsy Tours and Transfers

Leeuwin Lighthouse: The day started with a bang. I was taken to the Leeuwin Lighthouse, the most Southwestern area of Australia. I took the 59 steps to the top of the lighthouse, and what awaited was the breathtaking view of where the two oceans meet the Indian and Southern Oceans.

Light breakfast followed at the Lighthouse café; the delicious ham croissants were a hit. As you continue walking around the top of the viewing area, you are hit with a bird's eye view of the beautiful coastal city. It is fair to say that the camera got a decent workout as you are hit with mesmerising scenery.

The Leeuwin Lighthouse

Hamelin Bay Winery:  Soak in that dreamy view at Hamelin Bay Winery - the vineyard cascading down to a glistening lake below is enough to make anyone feel like they've been transported on an idyllic getaway. Take advantage of this beautiful setting with tasty platters and your favourite vino glass (or bottle!) perched atop the hill enjoying panoramic sights while you sip away.

Augusta, Western Australia

The view from the Hamelin Bay Winery is a complete picture.

Glenarty Road Winery: This was a winery with a difference. Five generations are proud; Glenarty Road has wine instilled in their impressive bloodline. The cellar door differs from others, but that is what I like about it. Set up in a shed that gives it an excellent personal class.

Tours are offered within the winery as you take a brisk walk around the property to see all their different vineyards for different wines made are made at Glenarty Road.

The best bit is you can wander the grounds with a glass of wine and even top up halfway through the tour at the number of portable bars around the grounds. Just perfect. I would also be rude not to recommend a favourite of mine, the Archer's Drop Fortified Savvy, complete with ice and a slice of lime. Those who love a sweet wine will savour its delicious taste.

The vineyards of Glenarty Road Winery.

Whirlwind Olive Oil: Get your tastebuds ready for a whirlwind of flavour with Whirlwind's Olive Oils! From the subtle zip of chilli oil to the tartness of lemon and orange or just classic olive - there's an Oil experience that'll tantalize even the most hardened taste buds. And don't forget their delicious seasoned Olives while you're at it!

Café Boranup:  At Café Boranup, tucked away in the serene Forest Grove National Park, you'll find yourself dining among some of nature's grandest creatures – trees! But more importantly, there's an array of exquisite dishes to choose from - my favourite is their chilli chicken burger. And if that wasn't delicious enough, they even offer fried abalone for those seeking something unique and extraordinary. Bon Appetit!

Cafe borunap

Great food is waiting for you with splendid views at Cafe Boranup.

Hamelin Bay:  Off the beaten path north of Augusta, I found a picturesque haven - Hamelin Bay. As if guided by marine magic, my gaze was immediately set upon an incredible sight: stingrays! Lazing around me in crystal clear waters as I stood knee-deep, these graceful creatures were within touching distance at times before quickly gliding away like ghosts beneath the waves. My experience with them gave new life to folklore tales and awoke a newfound admiration for one of nature's elegant mysteries.

Dreaming of my Only White Christmas in South Korea

Dreaming of my Only White Christmas in South Korea

I have only ever had one White Christmas, and heading into the festive season; I'm bringing back memories of White Christmas in South Korea.

As someone who has spent many Christmases in warmer climates, experiencing a white Christmas was a dream. I was in awe of how fresh snow transformed everything it touched, making even the most simple landscapes look like a winter wonderland.

The town of Muju-Gun, in central South Korea, was the perfect location for our winter getaway. We spent our days ice-skating, skiing, and building snowmen - all activities I never thought I'd be able to enjoy on Christmas day. It was indeed a magical experience that I will never forget.

So, if you can spend Christmas in a snow-covered wonderland, I highly recommend taking advantage of it. You won't regret it, and you'll see why as you read further into the article about my first white Christmas in South Korea!

White Christmas in South Korea

Fun in the snow during a white Christmas in South Korea.

Why does a White Christmas in South Korea mean so much?

I am an Aussie, and that means Christmas is snagged on a Barbie, beer out in the sky, swimming at the beach as the melting sun scorches your skin, and you are dressing down rather than rugging up. Yes, Christmas in Australia doesn't sound so bad; it's excellent, to be truthful. But you know the saying, a change is as good as a holiday.

I am not a winter fan; I wouldn't say I like it. The part of Australia I live in during winter gets cold, wet, windy and just plain old-miserable. But it doesn't snow; to me, the snow adds something extra to an occasion like winter, an added tinge of excitement, even happiness. I know that was my feelings for my family and me.

Others who live in such a climate may tell me I am crazy; perhaps you are sick of the snow and cold, and maybe you have the endeavour of having Christmas in the heat of summer. Not me, however, how I would long for another White Christmas.

Family fun in Muju

Family fun in Muju is a blast in the Winter Snow.

What is about Muju?

Muju was something special. Tucked away in the middle of South Korea, the scenery was divine. Mountains saturated the region with blissful white snow covering the peaks. It was a site to see.

The township was friendly, laid back and unique. It didn't come with the hustle and bustle of the capital city of Seoul or the modern features. It had a small-town feel, where all the locals knew each other, and everyone wasn't in a hurry.

Old ladies would stand in front of their restaurants, willing people to come and eat at their shop, almost begging. The town offered plenty of little guesthouses, restaurants, ski shops and general stores.

White Christmas in South Korea

Muju is spectacular in the white snow and ice.

Hiking is the first thing to do in Muju, along with skiing in the winter. And for a good reason too. The breathtaking scenery as you slug through the thick snow, into the forest, up the mountain and along the valley was pure delight. Ensure you bring your camera, as a million pictures wouldn't be enough in Muju.

Your only sense of modernity in Muju is the Deogyusan Resort. A European-style resort is where you go for the ski slopes, fine dining and your only escape from Western food, not that you particularly need it when Korean food is so good. The resort is expensive, but you will be in the right place if you like being where the action is.

Deogyusan Resort Muju

Deogyusan Resort is the go-to accommodation in the mountains of Muju-Gun.

Christmas time in Muju?

Although Christmas may not be celebrated in the township, the magic of a White Christmas in South Korea cannot be denied. The snow transforms everything, creating a winter wonderland that is magical and picturesque. Whether you're building a snowman with the kids, having a snowball fight, or simply taking a walk through the glistening landscape, the beauty and romance of the season are undeniable.

While there may be few decorations and little fanfare, the joy of spending time with loved ones in a winter wonderland is an exceptional experience that can't be replicated anywhere else. So, embrace the season's beauty and make the most of a very merry White Christmas.

white christmas in SOuth Korea

Enjoying a White Christmas in South Korea.

If you want a little Christmas touch, all you need to do is head to the resort. Decorations are on show, and at night the resort is lit up and looks spectacular in its Christmas lights. Melodies can be heard throughout the resort, belting out popular Christmas carols; whether in Korean or English, it doesn't matter. You still know the song and sing to the tune.

Now maybe other regions in the world do their White Christmas more passionately. I am sure it is the case. But it won't stop me from having an unusual attraction towards Muju and my only Christmas in the cold snow.

I wish you a very Merry Christmas to all you travellers from your Fair Dinkum Traveller.

Life Saving Tips to Survive at an Australian Beach this Summer

Life Saving Tips to Survive at an Australian Beach this Summer

Whether it's surviving the unrelenting swell of the ocean or take make your way to survive the searing sun - an Australian beach can be an excellent place for an adventure. As Australians, we have a love-hate relationship with the beach.

On the one hand, we're drawn to the beauty and mesmerizing power of its waters. But on the other hand, we avoid it when swells increase or temperatures soar too high. So at first thought, surviving at an Australian beach may seem complicated, but taking the proper precautions and being aware of your environment can make all the difference.

It seems like a paradise under the clear blue sky, but doom and gloom can happen. It has happened. So when at the beach, follow these simple rules and keep safe while having fun while holidaying in Australia.

Use this series of Australian Survival Guides to learn how to survive on our beautiful beaches and enjoy every moment!

survive at an Australian beach

Beaches are family fun, but keep safe when going into the unknown.

Life-Saving Tips to Survive at an Australian Beach this Summer

Australian beaches offer a unique experience for survivalists looking to sharpen their skills. Facing the unpredictable ocean and round-the-clock sunshine requires preparation, patience and skill - particularly if you hope to survive!

The best places to experience this are in Australia's various coastal regions, where pristine beaches offer spectacular views, plenty of beach activity and a wealth of marine life. However, it's essential to be mindful of the potential dangers when navigating a beach environment - everything from powerful waves to irresponsible beachgoers.

Therefore, being informed on safety tips is essential; whether visiting as a tourist or as a local, learning how to survive at an Australian beach is necessary!

Swim between the flags and Be Seen by the Life Guards

Swimming between the flags is essential to survive at an Australian beach. That zone is carefully monitored and safe from dangerous rips. The banners are strategically placed by Seasonal Lifeguards, who are there for your Safety and peace of mind.

While swimming between the flags alone provides protection, weaker swimmers should be extra vigilant and take all necessary precautions in and around the water. So remember: when swimming at an Australian beach, make sure you always swim between the flags.

Alcohol and water don't mix, so don't drink and Swim

You need to be aware of the potential dangers that may present themselves. The most significant risk not worth taking is drinking alcohol and getting into the water - this never ends well. Not only can alcohol impair your mental capacity, which could result in a swimming mishap, but it can also have fatal consequences.

This choice could lead to risky behaviour and weakens your ability to survive a potentially life-threatening situation like drowning. So when visiting a beach this summer, leave the liquor at home and enjoy our beautiful shores safely!

You know the slogan if you drink, then drive, you're a bloody idiot. The same goes for swimming and alcohol consumption.

survive at an Australian beach

Comfortable beachside relaxing in the shade at the beach.

Fill the Esky with ice because you need to keep your water cold and BBQ meat Fresh.

When enjoying an Australian beach, having a supply of ice in an esky is a must. The heat and humidity can quickly dehydrate even the most water-conscious individuals. By filling your ice chest with plenty of water or soft drinks, everyone can stay hydrated and refreshed throughout the day. And let's not forget about mealtime! Adding fresh meat for an Aussie barbecue is a superb idea to fuel up after hours spent in the salty waves.

If you're partial to a glass of wine, throwing in a single bottle can add some relaxation to your beach day. Don't underestimate the importance of having enough ice to keep everything cool and easily accessible. It's the key to making your trip to the beach an unforgettable, enjoyable experience.

Two eyes on the kids

As parents and guardians, our children are our most precious gifts. It is essential never to take their Safety for granted, especially when it comes to being at the beach. Kids are curious; one moment, they could be playing in the sand, and the next, they could accidentally be in over their heads.

To survive an Australian beach, constant vigilance is required so that moments of misjudgement or inexperience don't lead to an episode that can have irreversible consequences. As such, always watch your kids closely; you never know when a harmless curiosity can quickly turn dangerous.

Life jackets save lives.

Wearing a life jacket is not a suggestion when venturing into the waters. It's a non-negotiable safety measure that could very well save your life. Getting caught up in the excitement of kayaking through new and unpredictable waters or fishing off the rocks as the waves crash beneath you is easy. But we must never forget the gravity of the risks we are taking.

Many have lost their lives by being swept away off the rocks without any protection. So, be responsible and always equipped with a life jacket before setting out on your water adventures. This small precaution can make all the difference between life and death.

All smiles in beautiful Angthong.

I was kayaking in the comfort of a life jacket.

Protect the skin

Australians know how to survive at the beach, an essential part of skin protection. The key to this is following the classic slip, slop, slap rule of dressing appropriately in loose-fitting shirts, wearing a hat and slapping on generous amounts of sunscreen.

Protecting your skin is vital, so always follow these simple steps to survive the Aussie summer! And if there isn't much shade around, you should bring your own with a large umbrella or gazebo. This may sound like common sense, but it's worth remembering as Australia is "the sunburned country".

If you enjoyed reading the Safety at Beach article, surviving an Australian Summer is a great follow-up piece to understand more tips on surviving a sweltering Australian summer. With temperatures regularly reaching the high 30s Celsius and humidity levels that make you feel like you're in a sauna all day, staying safe in the sun needs to be a top priority.

The comprehensive guide considers all the necessary precautions: adequate hydration and reapplying sunscreen, avoiding too much physical activity, and taking breaks in the shade. All this, combined with other essential information for anyone planning to visit one of Australia's beautiful beaches this summer.
