As a fellow traveller, I can attest to the allure of Fiji. The serene beachside resorts, breathtaking sunsets, and luxurious deckchairs where you can take soothing afternoon naps are all there, just waiting for you. And while these little luxuries are undoubtedly delightful, don’t forget that Fiji has so much more to offer. It’s easy to get carried away with the cocktails and views, but if you do that, you might miss the most memorable experiences Fiji offers.
That’s why I’ve compiled a list of things you absolutely must do while you’re in Fiji – once-in-a-lifetime experiences that will stay with you long after you’ve left the island. So follow me, and let’s explore Fiji together.

As someone always on the hunt for an adventure, I can tell you there’s nothing quite like getting your heart racing with some adrenaline-pumping activities. Whether exploring the ocean’s depths with scuba diving or snorkelling, paddling through rapids in a kayak, or zipping through the trees on a zip-line, adventure activities are the perfect way to break free from the monotony of everyday life.
The rush of excitement that comes with these activities is unmatched, and the sense of accomplishment you feel after completing them is truly unforgettable. So why not step out of your comfort zone and try one of these thrilling adventure activities – your future self will thank you for it!
Visit Local Markets – Explore the vibrant markets and taste local Fijian culture. Try some traditional dishes, buy souvenirs and explore the many handmade items!
As soon as I stepped foot in the local markets of Fiji, I immediately felt the buzz of excitement and energy. The colourful stalls burst with fresh produce, handmade crafts, and unique trinkets. Walking through the narrow alleys, I could smell the rich aroma of traditional Fijian dishes and couldn’t help but indulge in a few bites.
Exploring the markets allowed me to immerse myself in the vibrant Fijian culture and truly appreciate the beauty of local craftsmanship. As I admired the intricate woven baskets and vibrant artwork, I couldn’t resist purchasing a few souvenirs to take home. It was a one-of-a-kind experience that I would cherish forever.
Visit a local village – Explore the local villages and witness the lifestyle of the Fijians.
It’s easy to keep to the tourist locations such as Port Denarau, the main Marina area in Fiji, with great luxury hotels, water sports, fine dining restaurants in breathtaking locations and a whole host of other activities that will make your time in Fiji all the more worthwhile. However, branching out a little is essential to see the real Fiji.
During my time in Fiji, I took a 4WD tour up into the hills for an hour drive to a local village, where we were greeted by the friendly locals who entertained us with a kava ceremony (more on that later), sang songs and the village people cooked a vegetarian lunch to complete the tour in style. No meat was provided because the locals could not afford it, but the feed was decent nonetheless.
The best part about exploring the village and witnessing their way of life is that they lived without technology and the comfort of bedding or modern facilities, which didn’t appear to make them unhappy because they were a happy bunch of people. Like most Fiji villages, they had a church and a village leader.

Relax in the Sun – Whether you spend your days lounging by the beach or pool or find a great spot to watch the sunset, Fiji has plenty of places to soak up some sun.
As I lay on the soft sand and felt the warmth of the sun on my skin, it was hard to imagine anything more peaceful and relaxing than this moment. Fiji has some of the most beautiful and tranquil spots to unwind and soak up some sun.
Whether I’m lounging at the beach, dipping in the crystal-clear waters, or perching on a rock to watch the vivid hues of the sunset, there’s something extraordinary about being in this tropical Paradise. I can’t help but feel grateful for these moments of calm amidst our fast-paced lives, and Fiji couldn’t be a perfect getaway for anyone who needs a little R&R.
Go Shopping in Nadi – Go Shopping on the local streets will enhance your holiday experience in Fiji.
Only a short bus ride from Port Denarau, Nadi is on the west side of the main island of Fiji, and if you’re staying in the area, a day trip to Nadi is a must to get a genuine vibe on how the locals of the country live their day to day life.
Nadi is a shopping district much cheaper than the tourist areas of Port Denarau, with plenty of shops on the main streets and a selection of clothing and local souvenirs to purchase on your travels. Be sure to check out the vast fruit and Vegetable market with plenty of seafood off the main street; you won’t miss it. Purchasing fruit has never come so cheap.
Visit a local school During a Fiji Day Tour.
A visit to a local school will delight your heart when you see the happy kids strut around in their classrooms without the technology we are used to in the modern world. You might even sing a song on a good day, as anyone who knows the Fijians will realise they love to sing.
It is a great way to get out and about and see the local schools and how different they are from Western civilisation. If you want a natural reaction from the kids on your visit, bring a bag of lollies with you, but be warned, you will be swamped by kids who have a keen eye for candy.
Mud Bath and Hot Springs
I recently had the opportunity to visit a mud bath and hot springs near Nadi in mainland Fiji, and it was quite an adventure. Initially, I hesitated to jump into a pool of mud, but being the daredevil I am, I went for it. After wallowing around for a bit, I washed off in the hot springs, and it was a game changer.
Not only did I feel refreshed, but my skin felt amazing. The mud is supposed to do wonders for your skin, but I can’t say for sure. If you’re a bit of a risk-taker and up for an unorthodox spa treatment, this is worth it. Just make sure to arrange for transportation beforehand!

Drink Kava. The Fijians Love it, and you’ll never forget the unique taste.
As soon as I landed on the islands of Fiji, I knew I had to try the famous Fijian drink that the locals can’t get enough of Kava. The taste is unique, and I can see why it won’t be for everyone, but when in Fiji, you must be willing to try everything at least once. Plus, it won’t kill you, I promise! It’s not for the faint-hearted, but I felt brave and ready to go.
There’s something special about being able to experience a drink that the people of Fiji so believe in; it’s like taking a sip of their culture and traditions. So, if you’re up for adventure and a taste of local life, I highly recommend trying Kava. Trust me, your taste buds won’t regret it!

The sun shining down on my skin, the cool sea breeze blowing through my hair, and the anticipation of what the day might bring all combined into a sense of adventure.
Joining a day cruise around the islands was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. As we sailed along the crystal clear water, our captain pointed out the different islands and their unique features, from rugged cliffs to sandy beaches. Each island was more beautiful than the last, and as we discovered one hidden gem after another, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for this fantastic experience.
