The first thing you’ll want to do upon arrival is head to the nearest 7/11 store and purchase yourself a Singapore MRT pass.

Once you have your card, you can top up the Singapore MRT Fare funds using the ticketing machines at all train stations, and with your newly purchased MRT card, Singapore is easy to get around by catching a train or bus to many areas of the island.

The MRT system will initially seem daunting, with many different train lines to get your head around while you try to work out when to change trains to another rail line.

It won’t take too long to get into the swing of things, and once you do, you’ll find that the MRT transport system is the easiest, most convenient and cheapest way of getting around in Singapore.

Positives of the Singapore MRT Pass:

The MRT fare is cheap; even the most extended trips by train won’t cost over two dollars.
Trains run all the time, so if you narrowly miss a train while rushing down the escalator in embarrassing attempts to beat the door, take comfort that the next one is only a few minutes away.
The trains stop at several locations, so getting to your desired destination is a breeze.

While the buses run pretty frequently, it is not as frequent as the trains, so you must be more patient while waiting for the next SG bus to arrive.

Walking the streets of Saigon, also known as Ho Chi Minh City, you’ll be immersed in a vibrant blend of old and new. The city’s rich history is evident in its French colonial architecture, while its bustling markets and street vendors showcase a modern Vietnamese culture.

The Chaos is Evident from Arrival at the Airport

As soon as we stepped out of the bustling Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City, it was clear that we were in for an adventure. Our Uber (or Grab, as it is now known) ride to our Airbnb apartment in the city’s heart was a hair-raising experience, with bumper-to-bumper traffic whizzing past us on all sides. Despite the chaos, Saigon was a city that immediately captured our hearts. The constant hum of activity, the colourful markets, and the sense of energy and possibility all around us made it a truly unique destination. Of course, navigating the city’s notorious traffic was no easy feat – crossing the road felt like playing a high-stakes game of Frogger.

Overcoming fear was essential when navigating the chaotic streets of Saigon. However, having my children by my side added a layer of terror. Fortunately, we all survived unscathed, despite numerous close calls while crossing the road.

Aside from the inevitable traffic, the Southern city of Vietnam offers many exciting experiences. It can be considered a city divided into three parts: modern areas, historical landmarks, and remnants of third-world regions. Now, let’s delve into exploring the bustling streets of Saigon.

During my first visit to Ho Chi Minh City, I faced the challenge of navigating the streets with my kids. The lack of sidewalks, public transportation, and even traffic lights made crossing the roads an adventure. More footbridges would have been helpful, but I only encountered one during my travels.

Despite these challenges, it’s clear that Ho Chi Minh City is a city on the rise. I do not doubt that when I return in the future, I’ll witness incredible transformations with its markets, traffic, historic buildings, and impressive shopping malls. Hopefully, my next visit to the Vietnamese City will be a little easier to navigate, allowing me to embrace Saigon’s spirit fully.

Teaching English in Laos was an experience that constantly made me reflect on the fond memories created during my volunteer days there. Even though I sometimes find English a tricky language, it was gratifying to assist others in understanding it. When I taught monks, I discovered how human and mischievous they can be, creating lasting memories. Additionally, teaching primary students and keeping their young minds engaged was a challenge that required me sometimes to make a fool of myself – but it was all worth it for the joy of seeing their progress.

I will never forget my time volunteering in Laos, where I had the opportunity to teach English. It was a life-changing experience that opened my eyes to the beauty of a foreign culture. The eager faces of my students as they absorbed everything I taught them filled me with a sense of pride and fulfilment that was truly unexplainable. Overall, my time in Laos was deeply fulfilling, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have helped others while also learning so much myself.

This experience allowed me to appreciate the luxuries and comforts I take back home for granted. Volunteering abroad was an enriching and unforgettable journey I will cherish forever.

The Lasting Volunteer Memories of My Time in Laos.

Which Volunteer Memory Stands Out the Most?

When I think back on my time volunteering in Laos, many memories come rushing back to me – the smiling faces of the children we helped, the feeling of accomplishment after a hard day’s work, and the beautiful scenery surrounding us. However, above all else, what stands out the most to me is the incredible bond we formed as a group of volunteers.

It was truly inspiring to be surrounded by many like-minded individuals, all dedicated to positively impacting the world. We came from different walks of life, but all shared a common goal and a passion for service. The friendships we formed in Laos will stay with me for the rest of my life, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have met such amazing people.

I remember feeling a pit in my stomach as the volunteer house appeared. It all came down to one thing: the people I would be working and living with for the next few weeks. Would they be friendly? Would we share any common interests? I couldn’t help but feel a sense of unease as I stepped through the door.

As it turned out, my fears were unfounded. The people I met were warm and welcoming and had the same sense of humour I needed to lighten the mood. Sharing a room with someone was a non-issue, as my roommate quickly became a new friend. Looking back, I realise how silly it was to worry about meeting new people. Volunteering abroad provides the best opportunities to form genuine connections with people worldwide.

Did you know that every volunteer you meet has invested their hard-earned money into their experience? Whether teaching English or building a shelter from scratch, they’re all united by a shared goal: to make a difference. That’s why every volunteer you encounter is genuine, kind-hearted, wanting nothing more than to help in any way they can.

I WASN’T SURE WHAT TO EXPECT when I volunteered in Laos with the Green Lion organisation. But when I arrived, I found myself surrounded by people from all over the world. Volunteers from France, Malaysia, Denmark, Holland, England, and Canada worked together for a common cause. Despite coming from such different backgrounds, we all got along famously. We spent our free time playing sports, mastering card games, enjoying cold beers, and even belting out a karaoke tune.

Of course, there were some slower moments, too. But in those times, we rallied around each other and found ways to inject humour and laughter into the situation. My experience in Laos was unforgettable, thanks to the fantastic people I worked with.

As I stepped off the plane and made my way to the volunteer centre in Laos, I was excited to meet a diverse group who shared my passion for making a positive change in the world. But I found something that blew me away even more than anticipated. Despite hearing that volunteers of all ages typically join this program, during my time there, I discovered that I was the oldest by a significant margin.

At 35, I was surrounded by college students and those under 22. At first, I worried that my age would be a roadblock to developing meaningful connections with my fellow volunteers. However, it wasn’t long before I learned that age is just a number. We all bonded quickly and shared a youthful energy that made every day special. And when my younger peers wanted to party longer on the weekends, I savoured the chance to enjoy some peaceful “me time” in the beautiful surroundings of Vang Vieng.

Reflecting on volunteering in Laos, I am still in awe of the fellow volunteers I had the pleasure of meeting. These young individuals were performing such selfless acts, paying their way for the experience and genuinely making a difference in the lives of others. It was a humbling experience to be among them. As the program ended, the reality was that it might be the last time I see any of them in person.

However, the memories we created together will always endure. Through trials and tribulations, we will always cherish plenty of laughs and wild times. Though our paths may never cross again, the bond we formed as volunteers will remain in my heart forever.
