A Desire to turn a dream into Reality – Visiting Antarctica

As a seasoned traveller, I have had the privilege of visiting many countries with unique treasures and experiences.

From my time spent in East Timor during peacekeeping efforts to teaching English to monks in Laos and even stepping foot into the demilitarised zone of Korea, I have been enriched by the cultures and histories of the places I have explored. But, despite all of these incredible experiences, my thirst for adventure remains insatiable.

At the top of my bucket list is visiting Antarctica, a land of endless icy expanses and natural wonders that has captivated my imagination for years. Watching documentaries and reading the accounts of other travel writers who have stood on its frozen grounds only fuels my desire to set foot on those same icy shores.

While the journey to this dream destination may be long and arduous, I know that I can make it a reality with hard work and determination. So, I press forward to pursue my dreams, eager to add another remarkable destination to my ever-expanding travel resume.

Cruising the Mighty Mekong River is an incredible feeling; a well-known river begins in the Himalayas andgoesy through Laos, Thailand, and Cambodia before finishing in Vietnam. It’s an experience to be near a famous river in Southeast Asia and cruise on slow boats while admiring the views. The Mekong River is a must-see for anyone visiting Southeast Asia. The river is an integral part of the region’s culture and history.

The crocodile-filled section of the river around the Four Islands Mekong may not have the gorgeous scenery; the murky waters and the commercial boats can be a little off-putting as they are everywhere. It is essential to look past it and admire the Mekong for what it truly is. The Mekong River is an integral part of Southeast Asian culture and history. It is a must-see for anyone visiting the region.

Coconut Candy Mekong Style

It is fascinating to watch the locals make their coconut candy without the luxuries of a factory, from shredding the coconut into powder to mixing and packaging. It is a detailed process with mainly female workers involved, who work quickly to get the job done and in a proficient matter.

On the taste, if coconut candy itself, it’s okay, but they are cheap, and why not reward those hard-working women by purchasing a pack of six? They could make great gifts for relatives who love their candy back home. The hard work in creating these candies is worth the purchase, and you would be supporting local businesses. So next time you need a sweet treat, consider checking out the local coconut candy.

Unicorn Island

Unicorn Island is one of the many enticing islands on the Mekong River. It’s here where most of the tour activities take place. From learning how to make and try honey tea to posing with a giant python snake, there’s plenty to do on Unicorn Island.

One of the day’s highlights is when the local villagers take the group on a canoe ride through the canals. Surrounded by palm trees and local housing, it’s a welcome relief from the heat. Plus, being in full shade protects against getting too sunny.

While more enjoyable amongst pretty scenery, the canoe ride can get annoying when the villagers beg more for a tip than letting their guests enjoy it. Nonetheless, it’s still an experience worth having whilst on Unicorn Island.

Food of the Tour

A basic lunch is served to the group on Tortoise Island, where we had the marinated pork with rice and vegetables, but I hear the menu can change depending on the day. If you still feel hungry after the initial meal, you can purchase extra food or drinks at your own expense.

After lunch, you get a good hour to wander Tortoise Island, where resting crocodiles can be seen caged in large numbers, and a few market stalls that sell local souvenirs. The best part is the hammocks, which get a good workout, with a few of the group getting a bit of a shut-eye after a feed.

Fruits of the tour and a Vietnamese concert

A bit of fruit with tea was the last on the Four Islands Mekong tour list. You are treated to a marvellous performance of Vietnamese music by the locals, with the show running for about fifteen minutes andvariousf artists performing in the mini-concert.
Even though Vietnam has experienced many years of war and conflict, it is still an incredibly hospitable and wonderful country to visit, with so much natural beauty and friendly people. The enjoyable performance contains a few basic instruments, their unique soothing voices and beautiful women dressedtraditionallys. It is a fantastic cultural experience to end a day before heading back home and sleeping on the bus through the chaotic Vietnamese traffic.

The music performance is indicative of this, being a relaxing way to finish off a tiring but fun-filled day of sightseeing. If you ever have the chance to visit Vietnam, go on the Four Islands Mekong tour – an experience you will treasure and remember for years.

Hotels V camping, I hear you now, is this “really” a debate? One is possibly a luxury stay by the swimming pool with a cocktail. The other is packing the ute, setting up a tent and roughing it out of a bush while relaxing under the stars and listening to sounds of nature hovering nearby.

No contest, right?

Well, it all depends on who you ask. Some are passionate hotel travellers who couldn’t think of anything worse than getting their hands dirty and sleeping with the snakes. Vice versa, there are the real rednecks of the world, who love nothing more than roughing it in the sticks, [easyazon_link identifier=” B01881TL3Y” locale=” US” tag=” fdt0c-20″]pitching the tent[/easyazon_link] and giving their 4WD a workout.

As for me, the author, I do both, so why don’t we go over the pros and cons of each option, then decide a winner in the battle of hotels v camping.

Camping

Pros:

Affordability: Camping costs next to nothing; in some areas, it’s free. But even if you are camping in style in a powered site at a Holiday Park, you will be saving a heap of cash.
Family time: Nothing reunites a busy family more than a camping trip. It excites the kids as they play on the sticks, swim in the river and roast marshmallows by a fire. It is family bonding better than ever.
An adventure: A [easyazon_link identifier= “1502419149” locale=” US” tag=” fdt0c-20″]camping trip[/easyazon_link] is an adventure as you explore the beautiful surroundings around you, get lost in the wilderness and discover new skills you never knew existed.
Take in nature: The beauty of being outdoors amongst the untouched nature and stunning surroundings.
Convenient: A camping trip can be decided on a whim. Load up the car and head out for a quick weekend getaway.

Cons:

Cooking: No room service out in the sticks; you will need to do it all yourselves, breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Washing up: After cooking comes the washing up. Always an arduous task when camping but an unavoidable chore.
Showering: If you’re camping in a holiday park, you’ll have the luxury of a communal shower, which is a bonus. At some camping sites, you will need to bathe in the river. If you are camping by the river, of course, but in some cases, you need to really “rough it.” Or purchase a portable shower and toilet from a camping store.
Hot and sweaty: Camping is usually most popular during the summer. With no air-conditioner, no fans, keeping cool is only possible by swimming in the fresh rivers or beaches.
Mosquitoes: Mozzies, bugs and flies. Probably the biggest downfall of camping. Expect to spend some time with those pests, and don’t forget your repellent.

Hotels

Pros:

Luxury: Hotels can be luxury, depending on where you stay. Sit back and relax in style; you are on holiday; click on the TripAdvisor link to find your perfect hotel or resort.
Fine Dining: No cooking is required in your hotel room. Dine out in the hotel’s restaurants or many restaurants near your hotel. Oh, and room service can be an option too.
Cocktails: [easyazon_link identifier=”0762457260″ locale=”US” tag=”fdt0c-20″]Cocktails[/easyazon_link] are popular, especially in a resort stay.
Swimming pools: And where better to drink your cocktails than by a swimming pool as you sunbake on the layout and dip in the pool in-between.
No cleaning up: Let the friendly staff clean up your beds and makeup room while you go out and enjoy the surrounds of the area where you are staying.
Comfortable beds: Most times, sleeping in a hotel is convenient. The chances are you will have a much better sleep in the comfort of your hotel room without squatting those mozzies away.

Beautiful resorts like Mai Samui are an excellent choice.

Cons:

Expensive: Hotels can be costly, and so are excellent dining and drinking cocktails by the pool. Be prepared to break the bank account.
Sorry, there aren’t too many negatives to staying in a hotel. Unless you find a horror stay, that is what TripAdvisor is for, so you can review your potential hotels.

And the winner is:

Camping is great, don’t doubt it. And I will continue to sleep in the great outdoors for time o come. Not only because it is affordable exercise, but it’s also great for kids and a great way to give them valuable outside time away from their fancy toys.

However, I would choose a hotel stay in pure luxury every day of the week and twice on Sundays. You can’t beat the comforts of a bed inside the four walls, with a private bathroom, room service and swimming pool below as you drink your cocktails.

So, your Fair Dinkum Traveller winner on this occasion is hotels. And by a bit of a margin. But that is just my choice, and options are always divided.
