best travel moments

When it comes to travel, 2017 was certainly a year to remember.

Travelling is one of life’s most exciting and rewarding experiences, and 2017 was no exception. This year was an adventure for the books, from the bustling streets of Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam to the tranquil beaches of Khao Lak in Thailand.

Even the cultural hub of Ubud in Bali and the laid-back streets of Vientiane in Laos added something unique to the mix. But out of all the fantastic memories, one specific event outshined them all. And although ranking the top five travel moments of 2017 wasn’t easy, this one experience truly stood out amongst the rest.

So, let’s dive into the list and reminisce on the best travel moments of the year.

Reflecting on 2017: Best five travel moments of the year

As we bid farewell to 2017, it’s only natural to reflect upon the past twelve months and the travel adventures that made them so special. Whether exploring a new city, trying a local delicacy, or simply relaxing on a pristine beach, we all have those moments that stand out in our memories. For myself, it’s hard to narrow it down to just five, but there were undoubtedly a few moments that left lasting impressions.

1. Volunteering in Laos

Teaching the primary kids.

Time Travelled: May/June 2017

Volunteering abroad was a fantastic experience that will never be forgotten with the people I met and the challenges encountered.

I chose Vientiane, Laos, as the location for my volunteering duties organised through the International Volunteering Headquarters. The program I set out to do was to teach English to primary school kids, and at the time, I had no idea was I was getting myself into.

Teaching the kids at their primary school was a real challenge, to say the least; holding the little one’s attention during class was a difficult task, but when things clicked and we songs were songs, read out the alphabet and counted numbers, the mojo got going.

I also enjoyed teaching the Monks English, which was an epic experience. The monks desired to learn, making the teaching more enjoyable. The class with the monks was full of laughter, cheekiness and special memories that will last a lifetime.

If you get the chance to volunteer abroad, take it; it can be an expensive expedition, but special moments like these don’t hold any dollar value.

2. Staying at the Amazing Alaya Resort in Ubud, Bali

Alaya Resort

Alaya Resort in Ubud, Bali.

Time Travelled: March 2017

I have stayed in many stunning resorts, but Alaya Resort in Ubud, Bali, is the clear leader.

A wonderfully designed resort with a solid Indonesian flavour to it, whether inside the hotel rooms or out and about on the grounds of the resort, Alaya is proud of its Indonesian heritage.

The dining experience at Alaya is five-star standard with two fabulous restaurants: The Petani and Manisan Restaurants. The Manisan will stir up those romantic strings, with the restaurant conveniently located amongst the rice fields that comes with delicious Indonesian cuisine.

I always rate any resort primarily based on the customer service, and the staff at Alaya Resort are top-notch, with their friendly greetings and pampering of the highest order. It made the experience alone at Alaya that extra special.

3. Christmas Wonderland in Singapore

Christmas Wonderland - Singapore

Christmas at Gardens by the Bay.

Time Travelled: December 2017

Lights, colours and Christmas carols hover through the speakers above. Gardens by the Bay is the setting for the glorious Christmas Wonderland in Singapore and is entirely appropriate with the Super Trees sparkling high above.

It was a savouring moment to wander through the festive grounds, witness many people in high spirits, and take in the Christmas spirit that was well and truly alive, with the magnificent choir belting out a Christmas tune or two.

Everyone got their money’s worth when the fantastic Christmas lights display began, and it stopped everyone in their tracks with their eyes glued to the spectacular show. For this event, I was fortunate enough to witness the show from high above on the OCBC Skyway and get more brilliant views of Singapore.

 4. Exploring the outdoors of Da Lat in Vietnam

Time travelled: January 2017

Gorgeous Da Lat. I ventured to this Southern Central Vietnamese city through a recommendation, and I’m glad I did. While the city centre is a unique attraction with great food, shopping and a lively atmosphere, the lure will always be to escape to the outdoors in and around Da Lat.

The surrounding area is green, with prominent hilltops, forests, lakes and magnificent waterfalls. There are plenty of scenic views in Da Lat; the best way to see it all is to hire a personal driver and have a great day out exploring Da Lat. Just don’t forget to charge your camera; you’ll need it for this particular day trip.

5. A family outing to Phang Nga Bay in Thailand

James Bond Island

Great photo shots can be found all over James Bond Island.

Time travelled: September 2017

Thailand often delivers when searching for those precious moments, and Phang Nga Bay in Southern Thailand delivers on all fronts. For this family outing, we took the Longboat into the Bay and witnessed paradise at its best.

It started with a canoe in the mangroves and the limestone caves, a blissful way to start any day trip as you lay back and take in the surroundings, with the only sounds coming from the oars hitting the water.

Next, the Longboat went deep into The Bay, and we stopped at the famous James Bond Island for a quick dip, sightseeing and more photo-taking opportunities with the little islet made famous in the 1974 James Bond film taking most of the glory.

The experience in Phang Nga Bay ended at Panyee Island. This floating village is set up for tourists and solid food at lunchtime and a way to view a unique lifestyle for locals who live in the floating town yet still have the luxuries of schooling, housing and a Mosque for prayer time.

Memorable travel moments of 2017, five of the best, and it could have been many other adventures throughout the year that could have made the list. What does 2018 have in store? Who knows because I liked to go with the flow and see what surprises would come my way next.

Happy travels.

Reflecting on 2017 – Favourite Travel Photos of the Year

A brand new year brings new hope; it’s also a time to reflect on the year that has just passed us by quicker than you can say, “happy new year”, 2017, and what a year it was in travel. There is no better way to reflect on the year than going through a few of my favourite travel photos.

Many unique destinations were visited throughout the year, with many great moments, particularly in Asia. It is fitting that some photos are more cherished than others in a year that will be remembered personally for the right reasons, and that is an epic year of travelling the world.

Reflections on 2017 – Favourite Travel Photos of the Year

What a year it’s been! As 2017 draws close, it’s the perfect time to reflect on our unique experiences. For those who love to travel, it’s all about the stunning memories captured in our photos.

The old and new of Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam is a marvel for anyone seeking vibrant experiences. Avoiding heavy traffic may be challenging, but it is well worth the effort as the city has much to offer. Traditional and modern architecture fuse to create a unique atmosphere that cannot be found anywhere else. It’s fascinating to see broken-down buildings standing next to towering skyscrapers.

These displays capture the essence of the city perfectly. If you want to immerse yourself in a town that reflects Vietnam’s past and future, Ho Chi Minh City is the place to be.

If you find yourself in Da Lat, you will undoubtedly be in awe of the natural beauty surrounding you. It’s no secret that the city is full of stunning waterfalls, but Elephant Waterfalls should not be missed. As you go to the falls, you’ll see lush green forests and hear the sounds of rushing water in the distance.

Once you arrive, you’ll be greeted by the breathtaking sight of water cascading down the rocks and the spray of mist hitting your face. It’s hard not to be entirely absorbed by the beauty of the falls. After you leave, Elephant Waterfalls’ magical sounds and visuals will undoubtedly be etched in your memory forever.

Culture and tradition are alive in Vietnam.

Walking the streets of Ho Chi Minh City and downtown Saigon is a must-try adventure for visitors to Vietnam. It’s a bustling metropolis alive with the energy of tourists and locals.

The area around The Old Post Office and the Notre Dame Cathedral is always filled with people having a great time, but when you go past these landmarks, you’ll see the natucity’s natural charm. Traditional Vietnamese culture comes into play through street food vendors, vibrant markets, and locals dressed in traditional clothes.

The sight of women wearing iconic conical hats and carrying baskets on their shoulders is common. As you take in the sights and sounds of the city, it’s easy to see why it’s often referred to as the heart of Vietnam.

Walking the streets of Ho Chi Minh City is an immersive experience that allows you to experience the country’s rich history and unique culture firsthand.

Family time on Four islands in Vietnam

Travelling with family is an incredible experience – the shared memories, the bonding moments, and the opportunity to explore new places with the ones you love cannot be beaten. I remember one particular day during our trip to Southern Vietnam when my boys and I went on the Four Islands day tour.

Something caught our attention while cruising and taking in the stunning scenery. We all turned in unison to see what it was, and what we saw took our breath away. The view was breathtaking, and we knew then that we were making memories that would last a lifetime.

There is truly nothing like exploring the world with the ones you love.

Spending time with them and helping them learn this universal language was a true pleasure, and it warmed my heart to see their eagerness to learn new things. It was truly amazing to be a part of their journey and to witness firsthand their growth and progress in mastering this language.

My Very Best Travel Experiences of the Year 2016

My Very Best Travel Experiences of the Year 2016

2016 was an excellent year for travel. Before entering 2017, let’s look at a few of the best travel experiences of the year.

Travel blogging is a unique and surreal experience. Every little bit of travel is looked at differently than the regular traveller. You digest the places you visit individually, trying to capture little information and colour. Instead of devouring the food, you taste and experience every little flavour. You mingle with the locals and try to understand their character. Travel is a whole new ball game.

It was a great year of travel. 2017 promises another great year with brand-new destinations and experiences bound to be had. But before bounding into the new year and saying goodbye to 2016, Let’s look at some of the experiences that need to be told or retold in this instance.

Travel experiences of 2016.

Fair Dinkum Traveller’s Top 5 Travel Experiences in 2016

Exploring the world and experiencing different cultures, landscapes, historic sites, and wildlife is one of the most rewarding habits I picked up in 2016. As such, I’m excited to share my top 5 travel experiences this year!

1. Entering the border at DMZ Korea

Getting close to North Korea’s border was an experience I’ll never forget. Entering the demilitarised Zone and into the famous blue buildings was spine-tingling.

Armed North Korean soldiers could be seen staring directly at us, protecting their side and barely any further than a hundred metres away from where we stood on the south side of the border. I couldn’t help but keep my eyes fixated on the soldiers.

In terms of safety, it was never an issue. As a group, we were well protected from the large numbers of South Korean and American soldiers surrounding the group. If you are ever in South Korea, ensure the DMZ is on the list.

3. Mai Samui the love resort

The Mai Samui Beach and Spa Resort provided a romantic haven for the perfect tenth wedding anniversary, with 5-star service. The attentive staff was ready to fulfil any need, while lavish accommodations welcomed guests into spacious rooms filled with luxury amenities.

At night, couples dined on mouthwatering cuisine by candlelight either beachside or at one of the fine restaurants – before indulging in stunning cocktails poolside beneath a bright sky! To further enhance their escape from reality, they enjoyed a couples spa treatment that left them feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.

It was all made possible thanks to this unforgettable resort experience!

4. Camping at Guilderton in WA

If you haven’t yet experienced the great outdoors in Guilderton, Western Australia, you’re missing out on something special. A short hour away from Perth, this little town is a paradise for those who love swimming, kayaking, and hiking. But what sets Guilderton apart is the stunning view where the Indian Ocean meets Moore River.

It’s a sight that will leave you breathless and make you feel like you’re living on a postcard. And if you’re worried about sleeping under the stars, fear not. Guilderton is far from dull or plain-Jane camping. So take my word for it – add Guilderton to your list of must-visit places in WA, and make memories that will last a lifetime.

5. Walking the grounds of Gyeongbokgung Palace

I was in awe before the sprawling Gyeongbokgung Palace, Seoul’s grandest tower, as if to rival its centuries-old buildings and temples for beauty shared a proud yet sometimes tragic history that provided an electrifying atmosphere.

The immaculate parklands took my breath away as I strolled through the palace grounds. The serene water features throughout the landscape were picture-perfect, making for an unforgettable experience. And if that wasn’t enough, my day was completed by an afternoon of traditional Korean song and dance on stage at Geonghoeru.

The ancient courtyard provided the perfect backdrop for this cultural spectacle, and I felt privileged to witness it firsthand. The beauty and history of this palace were truly awe-inspiring, and I highly recommend adding it to your must-see list if you’re ever in the area.

2016 was an incredible journey for me – from new memories and exotic destinations to unique opportunities, it exceeded all expectations!

From my journey to paradise in Thailand, which was filled with incredible sights and unique activities, to the culture-rich trip I took in South Korea, which allowed me to appreciate another part of the world completely, then rounding it all off with a beautiful exploration of my home state Western Australia – I can honestly say that it was one of the best years of my life.

The variety of experiences and cultures also helped me expand my horizons and bring me closer to nature. I feel exceptionally fortunate to have had these moments throughout 2016, and I’m grateful for each moment that made up this fantastic year!
