The Defector
During the first leg of our remarkable tour, we had the privilege of hosting a courageous North Korean defector. Unfortunately, due to safety concerns, she could not enter the DMZ. Her story, filled with heartache yet incredible bravery, touched the core of our souls.
With her sole companion, her precious child, she made the tough choice to leave behind her husband and her family and step beyond the boundaries of North Korea into China.
With the South Korean government’s unwavering support, she established a vibrant new life in bustling Seoul. Through translation, she openly shared the painful reality that she would never see her husband again, a man who would never have condoned her audacious defection. She had safeguarded her plan to flee like a secret treasure, shielding it from the prying eyes of her loved ones. However, deep within her heart, she nurtured the hope of embracing her parents again, yearning for a distant and imminent reunion.
Her extraordinary tale stands as a shimmering beacon of inspiration—an unwavering testament to a mother’s unyielding determination to secure the brightest future for her child, even at the risk of her own life. Out of utmost respect for her privacy and safety, we refrained from capturing her likeness through a camera lens, ensuring her invaluable story remains treasured solely in our memories.

The Observatory of DMZ South Korea
As your first stop, you’ll find yourself at the Observatory, offering an awe-inspiring panoramic view of the North from South Korea. Before ascending to the top, you’ll be treated to a captivating mini slide show that delves into the rich history of this remarkable site.
Once you reach the summit, the sight unfolding before you is nothing short of astonishing. Peering through the installed binoculars, you’ll be transported to a North Korean village that starkly contrasts its southern counterpart. Its unfinished infrastructure and absence of roads create an eerie atmosphere, while the scarcity of trees is a consequence of them being felled to provide much-needed warmth during the harsh winter months.
As the locals go about their daily lives in the fields, there’s a palpable sense of resilience and resourcefulness. Their commitment to traditional farming methods, relying on pure manual labour without machinery, is a testament to their unwavering determination. At this moment, the village seems like a forgotten relic, abandoned by its government, existing in a realm untouched by the passage of time.

But that’s not all! Imjingak Park offers more delights to satisfy your curiosity. A secondary observation point allows you to peer across the border, although it lacks the soaring heights of the Observatory. Joint Security Area

Now, imagine this: You are just a stone’s throw away from the North Korean side of the border. Although you feel safe, there is a slight tingle of excitement and trepidation.
As we step into a building on the South Korean side, we are flanked by South Korean soldiers, their unwavering presence ensuring our protection. On the other side of the building lie the blue buildings. Beyond them, North Korea stands tall, guarded by its soldiers who keenly observe our every move. The proximity is undeniable; we are indeed close to the north.
Two South Korean soldiers stand proudly on guard inside the blue buildings, demonstrating their impeccable discipline as tourists respectfully capture moments without intruding. Visitors inch closer to snap photos, making sure not to touch the soldiers. Clicks and flashes fill the air as we venture deeper into the building, eventually officially standing in North Korea. Leaving the DMZ, Korea
As the tour ends, the bus takes you on an intriguing journey within the DMZ area, exposing you to more fascinating sights and stories. We pass the renowned “Bridge of no Return,” a historically significant site that derived its name from the prisoner repatriation operations after the Armistice Agreement was signed. Imagine the prisoners’ profound choices: return home or remain with their captors.
Next on the itinerary is the captivating Taesung-Dong “Freedom Village,” a unique community long before the Korean War. This village permits residency only to those born in the town or married to someone from the village. Embracing a more straightforward way of life, Taesung-Dong lacks the technological advancements of the South and remains neutral, not aligning with either the North or South. Understandably, the population here is delightfully tiny.
Concluding our tour, we return to the Bonifas Camp, where you can explore a charming Souvenir store filled with intriguing memorabilia of the DMZ and the war. You even have the opportunity to purchase authentic North Korean currency.
