Visiting the Sacred Grounds of the Monkey Forest Ubud in Bali

Visiting the Sacred Grounds of the Monkey Forest Ubud in Bali

You could spend an hour at the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary in Ubud, Bali, and see more action here than an entire day at the zoo. It all happens in Ubud, especially in terms of our little money friends, as they run around in a frenzy and seemingly have a good old time in the semi-enclosed confines of the Monkey Forest Ubud.

The Monkey Forest in Ubud is much more than just a forest. Visitors to this bustling little attraction will explore beautiful temples, wander through marketplaces, and watch the active monkeys scurry around.

But what makes the Monkey Forest most appealing is its affordability – for just five dollars, visitors can spend an hour wandering the sanctuary, snapping photos of the high-energy primates who are always happy to put on a show. And for those who want to get closer to the action, there’s the option to participate in feeding frenzies with the monkeys. Overall, the Monkey Forest is an unforgettable experience worth the visit.

Watch your back and belongings in the Monkey Sanctuary Ubud

Monkey lovers, beware! The Monkey Sanctuary Ubud offers a unique opportunity to interact with these quick-witted furry creatures. The monkeys move around at lightning pace, swinging from branch to branch or scampering along the ground with all the energy they can muster.

The monkeys seem innocent enough, staring curiously in your direction, but watch out! One second, they’re eyeing your backpack; the next, they’re perched on your back or making off with your sunglasses. Of course, it’s all fun and games until it gets personal. So, visitors take note: keep a close eye on your belongings and your back when you’re in the monkey’s territory.

These Bali monkeys have teeth – sharp teeth!

In Ubud, plenty of monkeys are roaming around, and while it may be tempting to get up close and personal with them, it is essential to be aware of the risks. The monkeys have sharp teeth, and jumping on people’s backs is not uncommon. However, this does not necessarily mean they are trying to harm you. They are more likely to leave you alone if you let them do what they need to do. The key is avoiding sudden movements or gestures perceived as threatening. You can enjoy their unique presence without trouble by being patient and calmly observing the monkeys.

I was lucky on my monkey forest tour; in the shock of a monkey jumping on my back the first time before I entered the grounds, I tried to nudge it off with my hand, not knowing what to do. I tried to gently force it off me before realising this monkey wanted to swipe at me with its teeth. Luckily, I moved my hand in time before it moved away from me, yet only seconds later, it jumped on my back again, and we were friends again. I had learnt my lesson.

I suppose I was lucky because I have heard complex luck stories involving monkey-biting incidents, so tread carefully. It is essential to know that these monkeys are not fierce creatures, but they get protective or even reactive.

Sacred Money Forest

These monkeys in Bali have sharp teeth. Be aware.

Buy a bunch of bananas inside the Monkey Forest.

Inside the Monkey Forest, visitors can find stalls selling old bananas scattered throughout the area. Anyone can instantly attract playful primates’ attention for around fifty cents. As soon as a banana is in hand, a swarm of furry creatures will approach, eager to enjoy the tasty treat. However, visitors must heed the advice of knowledgeable staff members and keep an eye out for the “big one.” This alpha male demands first dibs on any bananas, so offering it to him without hesitation is best. Feeding the monkeys is a fun and unique experience that will leave a lasting impression on anyone who ventures into their territory.

Visiting the Monkey Forest is an opportunity to observe the playful and curious primates in their natural habitat and witness the captivating feeding time. As visitors stroll through the forest, they suddenly find themselves amidst a bustling troop of monkeys, all en route to a central location for their daily feast. The sight of so many monkeys congregating in one place is truly awe-inspiring. Watching as they eagerly await their food, their beady eyes glued to the feeding stations, one can sense the excitement and anticipation in the air. The Monkey Forest is not just a sanctuary for these mischievous creatures but a place where one can fully immerse themselves in the wonders of nature.

a monkey feast.

They all descend for a feast inside the Monkey Forest.

The action can happen outside the enclosure too.

If you’re looking to save a few bucks while visiting the Monkey Forest Ubud, there’s a word of caution to keep in mind. Skipping out on the entrance fee means missing out on the immersive experience of being surrounded by monkeys and that the primates might be making unscheduled appearances in the streets of Ubud.

Luckily, the forest is only semi-enclosed, allowing you to stand on the perimeter and let the monkeys come to you. You can still observe these curious creatures up close without forking over the cash. However, remember that interacting with wild animals always comes with a risk, so it’s best to proceed cautiously and respectfully.

In Conclusion to, the sacred grounds of the Monkey Forest Ubud – Bali

Ubud, Bali, is a unique destination that offers a unique experience for travellers looking to venture off the beaten path. One of the most notable attractions that set Ubud apart from any other city is the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary.

Visitors to this sanctuary have the rare opportunity to witness monkeys roaming freely in the streets, crossing roads and climbing trees as if just another pedestrian in the bustling city. It’s an experience that is not easily forgotten and will leave an everlasting impression on anyone who visits Ubud.

Meeting the Locals – Bali, Indonesia Edition

Meeting the Locals – Bali, Indonesia Edition

Meeting the locals is one of the best experiences on any adventure in any foreign country. It is right up there alongside discovering a hidden beach, coming across a raging waterfall, or hiking through famous landscapes, where the scenery is nothing short of sensational.

Travelling is more than discovering a country’s beauty, a trait we understandably get lost in. A country’s values often come from its people, the locals. The very same folk who make the country we visit that much more memorable.

Therefore, I ask, do you ever stop to have a good chat with the locals on vacation? Not just a basic “G’day, how you are doing” chat. But a genuine conversation. It may surprise you what you can learn about an individual and their upbringing in the country they are from. I can guarantee you at times; it will be fascinating.

In this new series of Meet the Locals. I will take you to different countries and introduce you to the fantastic men and women I have met on my adventures. In this edition, I headed to Bali, where I had the privilege to meet some great people who made my visit more enjoyable.

Hari

Hari, in the middle, works the bar at the Sakala.

Meeting the Locals – Bali – Indonesia

Get ready to mingle with the cool cats of Bali, Indonesia! This adventure is about meeting the locals and learning their way of life. We promise lots of belly laughs, cultural immersion, and unforgettable memories. Join us, and let’s make some new friends!

Meeting Wadi at Monkey Cave Ubud

If you’re ever in Ubud, stop at The Monkey Cave. This little coffee box is home to the best brew in Bali, all thanks to one man – Wadi. As the shop’s barrister, Wadi takes great pride in his work and craftsmanship. He’s been perfecting his coffee craft for over a year, and it shows in every cup he makes.

What’s more, Wadi makes an hour-long trip each day to get to work simply because he loves what he does. His passion shines through every sip of his coffee, and he’s always up for a chat with customers worldwide. So if you’re looking for top-class coffee and a friendly face, stop by The Monkey Cave and say “hi” to Wadi – the best barrister in Bali, maybe even beyond.

Chatting with Hari at The Sakala Resort

Sitting by the pool bar at Sakala Resort, I enjoyed chatting with Hari, an honest and hardworking employee. He shared his hopes and dreams of becoming an Indonesian coast guard. Despite enjoying his job at the resort, Hari longs for a different life.

He taught me about his upbringing in Bali, sharing stories of his humble beginnings on a small wage. I was impressed by his knowledge of Indonesia’s strict customs and rules. Our conversations were genuinely fascinating, and we became friends on Facebook. I wished him the best of luck in his pursuit to join the coast guard and am grateful for the insight into life in Bali that Hari provided.

Meeting the locals

I was catching up with a few locals on the streets.

My very own personal driver – Wayan

I met an older man Wayan by chance (Wayan is a popular name in Indonesia), walking the streets of Tanjung Benoa. It is not hard in Bali to find a driver; the hurdle is negotiating a fair price. Anyway, Wayan became my driver after a brief chat, and the rest became history, taking me to Ubud and then to the airport when it was time to leave the country.

It was a pleasure to meet Wayan and an honour to make him my brief driver during my stay in Bali. Wayan was bubbly on the streets, telling me about his wife of over thirty years and his two kids. Yet he was concrete on the road and focused on navigating Bali’s busy streets, ensuring I safely got to my next destination in Ubud. I certainly got his contact details for future visits.

And a whole lot more where that came from.

They were a few of the notable locals I met in Bali. However, meeting the locals in Bali ran more profound than that. Bali is full of great, honest people who are more than worth your time if you give them a chance. General workers on the street are willing for a photo or a pretty waitress in the restaurant happy to serve you a beer. Happy travels.

Have you met some great locals on your adventures? Please comment below and let me know and let me know about your experience when meeting the locals.

Bali Diaries 2017 – Day 4-6: Getting into the Heart of Culture in Ubud

Bali Diaries 2017 – Day 4-6: Getting into the Heart of Culture in Ubud

Culture in Ubud, it sound about right whenever venturing into Bali and that is exactly what I was seeking during my travels on the Indonesian Island.

This was the second and last leg of my Solo Bali trip. Too short for any holiday in Bali, but it was a business trip reviewing stunning hotels in Bali, and who can possibly complain about such work. As mentioned, this time my work took me to Ubud all the way from beaches of Tanjung Benoa.

An area of Bali I had heard so much about but never been to before. Thankfully on this Bali trip, I had the chance to see view this gorgeous inland destination of Bali, because Ubud was everything I hoped and much more.

If you missed the Tanjung Benoa edition of Bali Diaries, you can read it here, but for now, let culture take us the rest of the way in Ubud, for the second edition of my adventures in Bali.

Bali Diaries 2017 – Day 4-6: Getting into the Heart of Culture in Ubud

Best bit of the Ubud Bali trip

The Legong and Barong Balinese Dance: The best $7.50 I spent on Bali this trip. Yes, that is all it cost to watch a traditional and cultural Balinese dance called the Legong and Barong Dance. A series of different events and fantastic local music and a great performance.

It starts with lovely welcome dance by the beautiful Balinese women (very pretty indeed), to an epic and somewhat creepy warrior dance. It leads to a great finale with  a Barong Dance, which is about a warrior whose occupation is a hunter, with mis-fortunate and comical events.

While there are many different traditional dances in Ubud, make sure you get to at least one during your Bali vacation, because you will be satisfied you did, because it is just the culture in Ubud you need to witness.

Where I stayed in Ubud

The Alaya Resort – The very wonderful Alaya Resort, quite Boutique and stunning amongst the pretty landscapes of a wonderful resort. Especially the Manisan Restaurant that is in the middle of the lush rice fields. It all looks spectacular.

Once you get off the busy streets of Ubud and into the lobby, it turns intopure luxury. From the stunning Indonesian designed deluxe rooms, to the beautiful gardens and glamorous swimming pools, in it indeed a resort that almost heavenly. The stay was perfect and keep at look out for the Alaya Resort if ever in the area, because you’ll just love this fine resort.

The Main Highlights of the Ubud Trip

–  Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary: A short stay is a good stay at the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary and for $5 it is worth the entry price. The monkeys are well and truly alive, inside and outside the enclosure, fighting amongst themselves, scrambling for food and even jumping all over their guest. That’s right us humans.

It will only take about an hour to walk through the forest, as monkeys are running amuck and doing their thing. If you buy a few bananas, they well be jumping on your shoulders too in eagerness to grab a feed. Try not to panic and force them off you, they may decide to take a bite at you. But in general, it is a safe little forest to escape the busy streets of Ubud. Enjoy it.

culture in Ubud

You’ll see many monkeys during your time in the Monkey forest.

–  Walking the Ubud town centre: Ubud is a lively little town centre, especially for a Bali town so far from the coast. Boutique market stalls, jewellery stalls, plenty of restaurants, café’s for WIFI hit and plenty of massage parlours for relaxation. It’s even great to wander the town and see the temples and great sculptures that represents the main religion in Bali. A very pretty town, no doubt.

The most memorable part of my time in Ubud was meeting local man Wadi. A local barrister who runs a small coffee shop, The Monkey Cave. It was great to have a chat and the cappuccino was superb. You can find this little coffee box a stone throw from the Monkey forest.

It was short and sweet but that wraps up my Bali 2017 trip, it was a beauty where I spent my time in luxury, and check the link to read more of Fair Dinkum Traveller’s Travel Diaries.

I spent my days trying various water activities, such as snorkelling, parasailing, and jet skiing. But what I loved most about Tanjung Benoa was the opportunity to connect with the locals.

Fair Dinkum Traveller Review

What a fantastic time I had at the Sakala Resort! I felt pampered by the lovely staff and top-notch amenities upon arrival. The dining options were simply superb, leaving me spoiled for choice. And let me tell you about the Balinese Massage – utterly relaxing and rejuvenating. The highlight of my stay, however, was my comfortable king-size bed. It was like sleeping on a cloud! But the cherry on top was undoubtedly the swimming pool. It was an absolute dream for any water lover out there.

Overall, I can confidently say that my stay at Sakala was one I will never forget. Every aspect of the Resort exudes luxury, and it’s apparent how much dedication and effort the staff put into ensuring their guest’s an unforgettable time in Tanjung Benoa.

Bali Diaries 2017 – Days 1-3 – Beach Activities in Tanjung Benoa

Returning to Bali for a 2017 adventure was nothing short of exhilarating. I had been counting down the days until I could return to paradise and explore new places in this stunning part of Indonesia. One of my first stops was at Tanjung Benoa. I had only heard it was near a famous beach, but as I arrived, I had no idea what to expect.

It’s safe to say that Tanjung Benoa exceeded my expectations and thrilled me with every moment I spent there. The moment I got there, I was blown away by the sheer beauty of the surroundings. There were endless activities to choose from along the Bay, and I couldn’t wait to dive right in. It indeed was an excellent experience.

So let’s venture into another fun travel diaries edition as I take you on an adventure on the East coast of the Indonesian Island of God, where I stayed in a fine luxury hotel, did a few fun activities along the beach and enjoyed the streets of Tanjung Benoa in this, the first edition of Bali Diaries 2017.

Spend your first three days discovering what Bali offers – white-sand beaches, crystal blue waters perfect for snorkelling and sunsets that will take your breath away during your Beach Activities in Tanjung Benoa.

The best bit of Tanjung Benoa

The experience of parasailing in Tanjung Benoa was a first for me, and I have to say I loved every moment. I’ll admit that I was initially hesitant, but the friendly salesman persuaded me to take that leap of faith. Before I knew it, I was on the boat and up in the air, with a rope attached to a ship and a parasail to keep me hoisted.

If you can try parasailing in Tanjung Benoa, I highly recommend it – it’s an experience like no other! As someone who was not always comfortable with heights, the view on top of the ocean overlooking Tanjung Benoa and the Bay was breathtaking. I felt like I was on top of the world, and at that moment, I never wanted to come down.

Where I stayed in Tanjung Benoa

I was lucky enough to experience the beauty of The Sakala Resort during a sponsored trip, and I must say, it was an unforgettable stay. The spacious rooms, with their stunning views, provided the ultimate relaxation after a long day of exploring. The resort offers a true paradise in the tropics and is the perfect destination for a luxurious getaway.

However, the highlight of my stay was the large and spacious swimming pools perfect for a quick dip or a full day of lounging under the sun. And the dining options? The Sakala restaurant, situated by The Sakala Beach Club overlooking the Bay, offered some of the best cuisines I’ve ever tasted. Truly outstanding.

The whole design throughout the resort is breathtaking, with each area providing a unique and memorable experience. I can certainly say that The Sakala Resort is a must-visit for anyone looking to indulge in a luxurious 5-star experience.

The Major Highlights of Bali Diaries- Beach Activities in Tanjung Benoa

– Jet skiing:

The rush of adrenaline that comes with trying new things is irresistible. I had already conquered parasailing, but that wasn’t enough for me. I wanted a more heart-pumping adventure, so I gave Jet Skiing a go. As I approached the crowded beach, my nerves began to set in. But, with an experienced instructor by my side, I felt reassured.

I revved up the throttle, and the ski skimmed across the water at lightning speed, giving me an intense thrill ride. My heart raced, and the hairs on my neck stood on end as I felt the wind in my face and the spray of the salty ocean water. No wonder they call it a thrill ride! It wasn’t until we hit the Bay’s open waters that I felt alive.

– Exploring the streets of Tanjung Benoa:

While it may not have the frantic pace and commotion of some of the more bustling areas in Bali, Tanjung Benoa has a charm all its own. This little gem boasts a lively street home to various boutique markets, restaurants, and bars. And for those looking to indulge in pampering, many massage parlours offer services for a fraction of the usual price. But it’s once you hit the beach that the genuine excitement begins.

Surrounded by the stunning blue waters of the ocean, the beach truly comes alive as tourists and locals alike frolic in the sand and surf. And to top it all off, there’s even a Starbucks for those who need their caffeine fix. So be sure to take your time strolling the streets of Tanjung Benoa, soak in the sights, and don’t be afraid to say hello to the friendly locals. Just be sure to politely decline when asked for a taxi ride – after all, there’s plenty of fun to explore on foot.

With our first round in Bali’s Tanjung Benoa finished, it’s safe to say that this cozy corner of the island has a unique balance between stillness and vibrant energy. From its stunning coastline views to quiet fishing villages, we’ve been thoroughly enchanted by this part of paradise!

Indonesian Culture is the theme at Alaya Resort Ubud.

At Alaya Resort, they are proud of their Indonesian/Balinese heritage, which shows throughout the Resort’s design. You’ll notice a solid Indonesian flavour everywhere, whether in your hotel room with a lovely interior touch, the staff in their thoughtfully designed outfits, or the restaurants by the lush green rice fields. A rich piece of Indonesian Culture and lifestyle surrounds you.

If you are in Indonesia, then you should feel like you are in Indonesia. It may seem odd to talk of a resort’s proud Indonesian heritage within its own country, as it’s not always the case in a typical Balinese resort that goes the Western way. That was the point of difference the owners wanted to make when designing the Alaya resort, which was completed in 2013.

The staff rise to another level with excellent Customer Service.

My recent stay at Alaya Resort Ubud was indeed one of a kind. The staff greeted me warmly when I arrived and made me feel at home. I have never experienced customer service quite like this before.

What stood out was how the staff went above and beyond to make my stay comfortable. Every request I made, whether for extra towels or recommendations on local restaurants, was handled with care and enthusiasm. I felt like a valued guest, and I can’t wait to return to Alaya Resort Ubud for my next vacation.

When visiting Alaya Resort, I was pleased to be met with a friendly and helpful staff that made my stay all the more enjoyable. Not only did they go out of their way for me – but you can also count on it when choosing this Resort!

Relax by the boutique swimming pools.

As someone who loves to relax and unwind, I cannot recommend Alaya Resort Ubud enough. The Resort offers the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life with its serene vibes. The two boutique swimming pools are stunning and make the ideal place to soak up the sun and enjoy some much-needed R&R.

Surrounded by palm trees and with views of lush rice fields, I could spend all day lounging by the sparkling waters. And when I need a little refreshment, the Bamboo Bar is always on hand to provide my favourite cocktail. So if you’re looking for a slice of paradise in Bali, check out Alaya Resort Ubud!

Fine dine at Alaya in Style

Alaya Resort in Bali is the perfect destination for any food enthusiast. It showcases two exceptional restaurants, The Petani and Manisan Restaurants, to cater to all types of palettes. Despite their different approach, both restaurants serve delicious dishes, sure to tantalize your taste buds!

While The Petani serves traditional Balinese cuisine with a twist, Manisan introduces you to the region’s conventional flavours through tantalizing fusion plates. Whether it’s classic dishes or something new, Alaya’s pride and passion for quality will make your dining experience truly one of a kind.

With Petani restaurant right by the lobby, Alaya serves a varied menu of International and Indonesian food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The lively atmosphere is perfect for socialising with friends, relaxing over drinks and enjoying Balinese live music available during dinner hours at Petani.

Alaya ensures quality service for its guests during all three meals. It has exceptional cooking at all times – from traditional delicacies from that far corner of the world to traditional favourites from around the globe!

This Alaya Resort will surely provide an unforgettable dining experience in one of Bali’s natural wonders: the picturesque rice fields! The Manisan boasts a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, perfect for any time of day. Help yourself to top-quality local food during breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Breakfast at Alaya is made differently than other resorts, as it only offers A-La-Carte. No buffet. I loved the concept. Everything comes to your table fresh, from the fruit to your Western or Indonesian breakfast. It’s a great way to start your day.

Luxury Rooms with gorgeous views

One hundred five rooms make up the Alaya Resort; most of the time, the Resort is at 100% occupancy. Alaya has a good reputation in Ubud, and bookings in advance are recommended.

Perhaps the Resort’s strong reputation comes from the cheerful staff, the lush scenery, or the two delicious restaurants that await you at the Resort. However, another part of that equation is due to their stylish rooms, which come with that natural hint of Indonesian.

A Dala Spa to remember

You will feel at home, you will feel relaxed, and you will feel refreshed at the Dala Spa. Be prepared to be pampered and given a Balinese blessing before the treatment of your choice begins. Close your eyes, breathe and let the professional masseuse take care of you for the duration of your massage.

The Dala Spa offers a range of treatments with plenty of great packages available to suit your personal needs. I strongly recommend the Sandalwood Healing Massage; it’s all in the name as the Sandalwood is rolled all over the body, releasing any aches and Pains. Perfect if you prefer a massage on the solid side.

1. Visit the Monkey Forest
