The Experience of Tasting Durian for the very First Time in Malaysia

The Experience of Tasting Durian for the very First Time in Malaysia

Durian, the well-known tropical fruit native to Southeast Asia, captivates our curiosity not merely due to its taste or distinct appearance but predominantly due to its unique and spicy aroma that can make people flee in fright at the mere thought of trying it.

I must confess that I, too, have been acquainted with Durian for some time now. And by “acquainted,” I mean I’ve heard of this fruit but have never ventured into tasting it. However, all of that changed during a recent vacation to Malaysia when I found myself diving headfirst into the extraordinary experience of trying Durian. It was an opportunity that I hesitantly embraced, as this peculiar fruit is abundantly found throughout the bustling streets of Kuala Lumpur.

My hesitance stems primarily from the numerous unflattering reviews about durians. Like many others, these unfavourable accounts had successfully deterred me from embarking on a culinary journey with this enigmatic fruit.

However, my perspective shifted when I encountered a couple of Malaysian friends during my previous travels in Laos. They fervently insisted I try the fruit once I returned to their homeland. With no room for negotiation as a guest in their extraordinary country, I reluctantly obliged and begrudgingly embarked on this unique gastronomic adventure.

My Malaysian friends introduce me to tasting Durian.

An Experience of Tasting Durian in Malaysia

It happened on a sunny afternoon on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, the vibrant capital city of Malaysia. After an exhilarating day out with my Malaysian friends, riding the thrilling ATVs that whisked us through the breathtaking landscapes, we decided to make a pitstop at a charming fruit shop. As we entered, we were immediately captivated by the unique market setup that greeted us. Hundreds of durians, the iconic fruit of the country, adorned the spacious shelves, enticing our senses with their distinct aroma.

Although bare at that moment, the shelves were a sight to behold. A truck filled to the brim with fresh durians had arrived just moments before. The shopkeeper promptly shelved the precious cargo, carefully organizing them into five distinct category classes. Class-one durians, the epitome of perfection, were elegantly displayed at the top, gradually descending to class-five, which housed the imperfect but equally delectable fruits.

The atmosphere in the fruit shop was filled with anticipation as customers eagerly examined each Durian, searching for the one that would awaken their taste buds with its rich, creamy texture and heavenly flavour. It was a truly immersive experience, immersing ourselves in Malaysia’s vibrant fruit culture’s sights, sounds, and scents.

At this stage, I couldn’t comprehend the extensive discussions about its distinct smell. Standing close, I found nothing offensive about it; it seemed rather ordinary to me. Of course, that’s just my perspective, as my olfactory senses failed to detect anything unusual.

My friends, resembling connoisseurs of selecting premium fruits, meticulously handpicked two hefty and extravagant durians, priced at approximately 30 Australian dollars each. A skilled fruit shop employee produced a substantial knife and commenced the preparation of the durians.

Gathered around a modest table adorned with a couple of stools, it was time to partake in the Malaysian-style durian experience.

The Secret Confession of My Durian Experience

The taste of this fruit was unlike anything I had ever experienced. As it was my first time trying it, I couldn’t quite find the words to describe its uniqueness. Let me give it a shot!

The taste was surprisingly creamy, with just a hint of sweetness that mingled with a subtle bitterness. At first bite, it didn’t immediately captivate my taste buds, but the table was filled with abundant food, so I persevered in my quest to become acquainted with its flavours. I even dared to hope that I might eventually come to savour and appreciate it.

Durian

The Durians are selling fast if you can believe that.

For my confession, I must reveal whether my Malaysian acquaintances may stumble upon this narrative or perhaps not. But when tasting Durian, I am compelled to confess that I feigned enjoyment. Beneath a composed countenance, the truth remains that the allure of this peculiar fruit eluded me.

I cannot surrender myself to the sentiment of adoration for the taste of Durian. While I refrain from uttering “hate” when describing this exotic fruit, I must admit that its distinctive flavour never captivates my palate. It is worth mentioning that the Durian I sampled was purportedly of unparalleled quality.

Allow me to express my honesty when disclosing that a single durian commanded a lofty price of $30 at the esteemed purveyor in Malaysia. Rest assured. However, my eagerness to embark on another tasting venture remains quite tempered for this particular food in Malaysia.

Have you tasted Durian before? Did you like it? Explain in the comments below what you thought of the taste when you first tried Durian.

Review of the The Face Suites Airbnb Apartment in Kuala Lumpur

Review of the The Face Suites Airbnb Apartment in Kuala Lumpur

Finding suitable accommodation requires meticulous planning and thorough research when planning a trip with my family. Unlike travelling alone, I don’t simply settle for any option.

However, I become more meticulous in my approach to my loved ones. I meticulously review guest reviews, scout potential locations, and search for the best deals.

When preparing for my recent trip to Kuala Lumpur, I diligently searched through hotel search engines like Booking.com and TripAdvisor. Additionally, I explored Airbnb’s main website, which has become one of my favourite platforms for finding suitable family accommodation.

On this particular occasion, Airbnb stood out in all aspects. From the reasonable pricing of the two-bedroom apartment to its prime location in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, it was the perfect choice for our stay.

The Face Suites Airbnb apartment I discovered for this trip offered many amenities. It featured a full-scale kitchen, mini-laundry, spacious living area, two bathrooms, and two comfortable bedrooms. All of this was situated within a modern building, conveniently located close to all the action in the city.

What made this find even more appealing was the price. For our nine-night stay in Kuala Lumpur, we paid a mere $700, averaging just $77 per night.

Believe me when I say this was an unbeatable deal. It felt like we were robbing the place with such a steal for family travel in Malaysia.

This Airbnb apartment in Kuala Lumpur was booked using my funds and is not a sponsored post. I’m writing an opinion of my stay at the Face Suites Airbnb in KL because I must bring travel bargains as I experience them. So, here I am giving you my latest accommodation review. Enjoy.

Accommodation Review – The Face Suites Airbnb Apartment in Kuala Lumpur

My family had a fantastic stay at The Face Suites Airbnb apartment in Kuala Lumpur! The location was perfect – right in the city’s heart, close to all the best restaurants and bars.

The apartment was spacious, clean and comfortable, with everything I needed for my stay. The highlight of the condo was the stunning view from the balcony – I could see the Petronas Towers and KLCC Park from there. Overall, I had a fantastic experience and highly recommend this Airbnb to anyone visiting Kuala Lumpur.

Let’s take a closer look at the Face Suites.

Booking the Airbnb Kuala Lumpur Accommodation

Booking the room was a surprisingly straightforward process. Firstly, I navigated to the Airbnb website and inputted the precise dates that I would be in Kuala Lumpur, eagerly anticipating the results that would soon be presented. To my delight, a wide array of apartments greeted me on the search results page, each offering its unique charm and allure.

With eager anticipation, I meticulously examined each option that lay before me. I could visualize myself in each apartment by diligently perusing through various captivating pictures. As if that weren’t enough, I also took the time to carefully study the layouts of the apartments, ensuring that each living space would perfectly complement my needs and preferences.

But my search didn’t stop there. I delved even deeper by immersing myself in the captivating words of the guest reviews. The honest accounts and recommendations of previous visitors gave me valuable insights into the apartments, allowing me to choose confidently.

And then, there it was. The decisive factor that would ultimately sway my decision – the pricing. I communicated with the host after ensuring the apartment was within my desired budget. I drafted a few thoughtful messages inquiring about specific details and seeking reassurance. Much to my delight, the host responded promptly, providing my desired answers. Reassured and content, I confidently proceeded to the “pay now” section and effortlessly confirmed the payment.

In retrospect, the entire process was as simple as it was exhilarating. From the initial exploration through an enchanting assortment of apartments to the final exhilarating moment of confirming the payment, every step was infused with excitement and anticipation.

Ah, the joy of discovering the perfect abode.

The Apartment Building – The Face Suites

Situated in the lofty high-rise building, The Face Suites, our apartment offered a unique blend of residential and hotel accommodations.

What made our stay exceptional was the privilege of sharing facilities with the hotel. We had access to the Infinity pool, a breathtaking oasis on the 51st floor, and dined at the Skydeck restaurant, where the city’s stunning skyline unfolded. The iconic landmarks – the majestic Petronas Twin Towers and the soaring KL Tower – only added to the charm.

While the Airbnb Kuala Lumpur apartment didn’t offer the customary room service or daily housekeeping, it was an inconsequential trade-off considering the unbeatable price we secured for such luxurious accommodations. Making our bed and tidying the bathroom became small tasks in the grand scheme. All in all, our stay delivered an unforgettable taste of Kuala Lumpur’s allure.

Indulging in a selection of light snacks and enthusiastically drinking more water, we reluctantly accept that it’s time to embark on the downhill journey. A Wet and Wild Hike on the Return

A wet and wild hike is not what we initially signed up for. Still, in some unexpected ways, I am surprisingly grateful that we encountered this unforeseen challenge during the exhilarating downhill descent. It added another dimension to our overall experience as we reminisced about our time in Malaysia.

Our brisk downhill pace gradually transformed as nature’s elements intensified with powerful rain and an ominous storm above. Out came the trusty ponchos, shielding us against the relentless downpour. Each step became a careful negotiation on the treacherously slippery terrain, compelling us to fully engage the hiking poles, using them as steadfast anchors to maintain balance and stability.

The weather begins to change for a wet and wild hike experience.

By now, the distant melodies of the forest have vanished, leaving behind only the symphony of the descending storm. The dark sky unexpectedly swallowed the afternoon light, casting an eeriness upon the surroundings.

There’s something captivatingly enchanting about the rain in this jungle, an indescribable allure that heightens the rainforest’s innate beauty. I struggle to grasp its essence, but seeing water cascading from every tree and plant within the forest amplifies its magnificence.

After a few hours of descending the slippery path, our soaked and adventurous expedition ends, leaving us feeling clammy and chilled from our drenched attire.

Nonetheless, our spirits remain resilient as laughter and smiles illuminate our faces. This experience fills us with a sense of pride, and as a father, it swells my heart to witness my two boys bravely forging ahead with the guide, undeterred by the inclement weather.

Meanwhile, Mum and Dad linger several meters behind, attempting to keep up with the pace-setters at the front. The boys emerge as valiant warriors within the Kuala Lumpur rainforest, showing me pride.

Let’s get to the point: airports can be downright painful at times, especially when forced into a long transit that requires long waiting on a seat or corner area of the airport that, after several hours, feels like you are sitting on needles as your back begins to stiffen. You feel every ache in your body. You begin to feel fatigued, but unfortunately, sleep is near impossible, and there is only so much money your credit card will allow you to spend when shopping in duty-free stores.

And don’t get me started if you have children. It only worsens for the poor old parents who do their best to entertain the restless little ones.

This article won’t solve all your transit problems unless you are in a significant airport worldwide with accommodation that doesn’t require you to go through immigration. Fortunately, that is a convenience you’re afforded at a cost when transiting at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport Two (KLIA2 ) for tourists waiting in long transit. In this case, it’s the Sama-Sama Express Hotel inside the KLIA2 terminal—the AirAsia terminal of Kuala Lumpur.

My Verdict of the Sama-Sama Express Hotel

During my visit to KLIA2 Airport, my wife and I enjoyed staying at the exquisite Sama-Sama Express Hotel for seven hours. It was a remarkable experience, especially considering it was our first time paying for a room after several visits to the bustling airport. I must say, it was worth every penny.

We were greeted with warmth and hospitality from the moment we checked in. The room was a sight to behold, with its tasteful decor and cozy ambience. We immediately felt at ease, knowing we were in for a relaxing and rejuvenating stay.

One of the highlights of our brief but memorable stay was the opportunity to indulge in a much-needed rest. The plush and comfortable bed provided the perfect respite after a long journey. We slept like babies, waking up feeling refreshed and revitalized.

As if the delightful accommodations weren’t enough, we also enjoyed the luxurious amenities. A warm and refreshing shower was the perfect way to wash away the weariness of travel. It was a true oasis of relaxation, leaving us feeling pampered and rejuvenated.

I wholeheartedly recommend the Sama-Sama Express Hotel to anyone in the terminal for over six hours, particularly during nighttime. Trust me when I say there is no better way to start your holiday than feeling refreshed and ready to embark on your next adventure.

Kuala Lumpur Diaries: Days 7 -10 – Goodbye Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur Diaries: Days 7 -10 – Goodbye Malaysia

The Final days in Kuala Lumpur have come, and what an incredible adventure it has been. It’s only goodbye Malaysia for now.

As any trip ends, I experience a mix of emotions, feeling a little down in the dumps (until the next adventure comes along). However, this time is different. Kuala Lumpur has left an indelible impression on me, making it difficult to bid farewell to Malaysia.

But fear not, Malaysia! This may be goodbye for now, but I am eagerly looking forward to my return to immerse myself in the wonders of Kuala Lumpur. Kuala Lumpur has much to offer, from its vibrant culture and friendly people to its captivating city attractions and affordable accommodations.

Moreover, on my next visit to Malaysia, I vow to spread my wings even further and explore the rest of this beautiful country. From the breathtaking landscapes to the pristine beaches, Malaysia has a treasure trove of natural beauty waiting to be discovered. And let’s not forget about the warm-hearted people and the numerous other reasons that make this country an extraordinary destination worth exploring.

But for now, it’s time to dive into the highlights and memories of my stay in Kuala Lumpur, specifically during days 7-10, as I take you into this edition of KL diaries. Let the adventure begin!

Kuala Lumpur Diaries Days 7-10 – It’s Goodbye Malaysia For Now

As the curtains draw near on our memorable stay in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, we bid farewell to this enchanting city with a bittersweet mix of nostalgia and gratitude. Over the past four days, we immersed ourselves in the vibrant and diverse cultural tapestry that Kuala Lumpur offers.

Visiting the Pavilion Shopping Mall

I have walked into numerous awe-inspiring shopping malls in my time, but I wouldn’t go as far as to say that this one ranks among the absolute best. Nevertheless, the Pavilion Shopping Mall in KL is undeniably impressive.

As you enter through any of its many entrances, you are immediately greeted by an enticing café strip stretching for about 200 meters. Coffee lovers like myself can’t help but feel like we’ve stumbled upon heaven with the abundance of coffee shops and bars lining this strip.

The mall’s beautifully designed layout adds to its allure, which houses many retail outlets across various levels. There’s also a fantastic food court, luxurious dining areas, and a mega cinema complex with people queuing for the latest Avengers movie.

However, my highlight at the Pavilion Shopping Mall was Tokyo Street. This dedicated section of the mall offers a delightful mix of Japanese-related retail stores, antiques, sweets, and an array of magnificent Japanese restaurants serving everything from sushi trains to ramen and different styles of Japanese soup. The culinary experience here is unrivalled, and the Japanese-inspired design elements throughout the section add even more charm to the mall.

In summary, the Pavilion Shopping Mall in KL is an impressive destination that caters to the desires of both avid shoppers and food enthusiasts alike. Its range of amenities and carefully curated sections, such as Tokyo Street, make it an unforgettable experience for visitors.

An Evening in Kuala Selangor

Earlier in the week, my family and I embarked on a captivating evening tour of Kuala Selangor. Nestled in Malaysia, this picturesque location offered us a delightful family outing with memorable experiences. From feeding adorable monkeys to indulging in a mouthwatering seafood dinner with a breathtaking sunset backdrop, our time in Kuala Selangor was remarkable.

Our adventure began when our friendly and knowledgeable female driver picked us up from our apartment. Throughout the journey, she impressed us with her impeccable English and extensive expertise about her home country and the world. As we departed from the bustling city, we relished the approximately 90-minute drive towards Kuala Selangor, revelling in the peacefulness of the countryside.

Our first stop was Taman Alum, where we encountered many curious black and brown monkeys eagerly searching for food scraps. These playful creatures were not shy in their pursuit, often leaping onto us to secure their share. Although the locals assured us that the black monkeys were friendly, their energetic antics provided endless laughter for my boys, who eagerly befriended their new companions.

As dusk settled upon us, we made our way to Kuang Wah Seafood, a charming riverside restaurant along the Selangor River. The delectable seafood feast that awaited us was beyond compare. From succulent crabs and prawns to delicious sweet and sour pork, accompanied by a generous serving of fragrant fried rice, our taste buds rejoiced as we savoured every bite. Yet, the highlight of our meal was undoubtedly the breathtaking view of the sun majestically descending over the Malaysian landscape. It was a genuinely sensational sight to behold.

The grand finale of our evening escapade was the enchanting fireflies. Boarding the longboats, we embarked on a mesmerizing journey to witness these magical creatures illuminating the night sky. It was an otherworldly experience as countless fireflies radiated their soft glow along the riverbanks. Despite the pitch-black surroundings, the tranquillity of our boat ride was only accompanied by the symphony of nature in Kuala Selangor.

Capturing the essence of the luminous fireflies was a challenge as darkness enveloped the area. Hence, photography without the use of flash proved impossible. However, you can discover the various attractions in Kuala Selangor by referring to the tours below at Get Your Guide.

On top of the Petronas Towers

Previously, we had the opportunity to witness the captivating Petronas Twin Towers rising above us, adorned by the night sky. This time, on a Thursday evening, our adventure took us to the observation deck on the 86th floor, allowing us to indulge in the breathtaking panoramic views of Kuala Lumpur.

To ascend to the pinnacle of the Petronas Towers, we had to endure a wait of approximately three days, with pre-bookings being imperative. Our excursion was planned meticulously, aiming to bask in the glorious hues of the sunset.

However, capturing stunning photographs proved challenging, as the vibrant interior lighting imposed its dominance. As a result, every guest in the evening session was driven to clutch their cameras closely, shielding their lenses from the overpowering radiance. Noteworthy, the observation area restricts the use of selfie sticks and tripods.

Overall, our experience was satisfactory. In hindsight, opting for a tour during a sunlit period would have allowed us to immerse ourselves in the city views accentuated by natural colours. Nevertheless, deciding whether to splurge on the fees to reach the top remains a personal choice.

Wander through KLCC

KLCC, short for Kuala Lumpur City Centre, is a bustling central area offering an array of attractions for visitors. Its prominent features include the iconic Petronas Twin Towers, which stand tall and majestic amidst the city skyline.

Adjoining the towers is the picturesque KLCC Park, a tranquil oasis amidst the urban jungle. This vibrant district also boasts extensive dining options and retail outlets, ensuring something for everyone.

One of the highlights of KLCC is the renowned Suria Shopping Mall, located beneath the Petronas Towers. This modern shopping destination offers a variety of stores, while the nearby KLCC Park hosts another contemporary mall with a wealth of outlets, delectable food options, and charming cafes.

However, the spectacle awaits visitors after nightfall, as they can witness a captivating fountain light show at approximately 8 p.m. This mesmerising display, combined with the enchanting view of the towering Petronas Towers, creates an unforgettable experience.

A word of advice for those venturing into the city: traffic in Kuala Lumpur remains consistently busy throughout the day. For a more enjoyable and hassle-free experience, exploring on foot or utilising public transportation options is recommended.

Berjaya Times Square

In Kuala Lumpur, one stands out amidst the abundance of shopping malls – Berjaya Times Square. What sets it apart is not only the fact that it was the last attraction we visited in KL but also because it offers a distinctive experience.

While boasting the usual retail and food outlets in any shopping mall, Berjaya Times Square holds a surprise on its fifth floor – an Indoor theme park. As you step into this wonderland, you’ll find yourself immersed in a world of rollercoasters, thrilling rides, and various other forms of entertainment that you would typically encounter in a theme park anywhere in the world.

Though not as colossal as Lotte World in Seoul, Korea, this indoor theme park is still a captivating spectacle to visit with your family in Kuala Lumpur.

Goodbye Malaysia – For now

Goodbye Malaysia, a bittersweet farewell, as I carry cherished memories back home. With a hopeful “See you soon,” I bid farewell to Malaysia for now, eagerly anticipating my next visit to this beautiful country.

But fear not, dear readers, for there is not much time to wait until my next thrilling adventures in the travel diaries. In just a few short weeks, I will embark on my first-ever journey to Japan, where I will explore the vibrant cities of Osaka and Kyoto. Stay tuned for captivating tales and immersive descriptions of these enchanting destinations.

Until then, take care and may your travels be filled with joy and wonder.
